I just bought a parts WD. The suffix on the casting number behind the magneto ends with 14. My other WDs have a much higher number. My 1937 WC has a suffix of 10. Any ideas about the 14 suffix?

I think the last casting number was #41 ?? on the late WD's. So from #10 to #41 I'm thinking they had 4 or 5 different numbers. Small subtle changes were made to the block castings, so they changed the number to reflect the change. What's you serial number on the block behind the air cleaner hose?? or is there one ....

I just drove out and looked at the motor again more carefully. The complete casting number is AM 3853-14 and the engine does not have the sideplate behind the magneto. My 1954 WD45 has a casting number of 3853-6. So looks like someone dropped a WD45 motor into the old WD using the magneto and WD style manifold.

What is the serial number on the block???? Someone may have bought a new block at some time after 1953 and the p/n's superceded up to a WD45 block. THERE WON'T BE A S/N IF IT IS A PART REPLACEMENT and it sure doesn't mean there's positively a WD45 crankshaft in it.

Dr. Allis, you are right. There is no serial number on the block. At this point, it appears as though i don't know if it is a WD45 engine or a WD45 block with WD "innerds". When I remove the crankcase the mystery will be solved unless I am missing something. Thanks.

It may very well be a WD on the inside and a WD-45 block. Which manifold and carb are on it ?? WD45 parts are different.

It has a WD manifold, carb and air cleaner. Likely, it has WD internals. I have a WD that had a WD45 crankshaft and pistons but the carb and manifold were for a WD. It ran great with that configuration. Recently, I put on a WD45 carb, manifold and air cleaner. With just the crankshaft it was spunkier than my other WD but now it is way spunkier.

I like to use the blocks without the serial number for the rare tractors, like the WD45 propane. The paint police look for the serial number but when there isn't one you can fall back on "The original one broke and was dealer replaced"

Simple answer for WD or WD45 block.
Does it have the large flat removable cover plate on the R/H side.

Gary, he already posted that it doesn't have the side plate. So, a 45 engine, a gleaner engine, factory replacement, or one of a multitude of pieces of equipment that Allis used the 45 engine in could be the answer. Oh, the mystery deepens. Somebody call Hercule. LOL

Yep, could be ANY of those engines...... Since they threw out or burned all of the old records, we'll never know WHAT we have until you take it apart... SO, DO NOT buy any replacement parts for internals UNTIL you have it APART and KNOW what you have.
