Did unstyled WC's ever have a through the hood muffler? I just bought one that does. Just curious. It's a 1937. I figured it was a farmer mod, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

My parts manual shows both the straight pipe that "leans" out to the left of the tractor and a muffler; it's unclear whether the latter came through the hood....but I'd guess not unless the pipe had an angle bend in it!

From what I've seen none of them routed through the good all the unstyled went straight out the side the pipe on them is supposed to be small if someone routed it through the hood that's aftermarket. Styled I think they went through the hood though

All the un-styled were side exit, after the styled tractors started the kero-dual fuels still exited out the side, only the straight gas styled came through the hood. As a note, in the late 70's on for a long time the old style manifold was not available any more, and the only thing an owner could do was buy the later style manifold and cut a hole through the hood. That's what the wife's great-grand Dad did to my 41 WC, when they sold the farm and it came to my house, we found the disc where he drilled out the hood with a hole saw on a shelf next to where it stayed parked.

So, if one had a 1948 "WD" dual/fuel kerosene burner, the exhaust was still out the side. My question is this......was there a hole in the hood for the straight up exhaust ?? The p/n of the hood is different, but it would be because of the small fuel tank mounted on the right side. Was the muffler hole there or not ??

Thank you. I just wanted to be sure, as I've found an old WD that was originally supposed to be kerosene, but someone has converted it over to gasoline. They've changed carb, manifold and the hole in the hood sure looked OEM, but maybe they just did a nice job of cutting the muffler hole. Without a muffler hole for dual/fuel is kind of what I come up with looking thru AGCOPARTS.com too. Thanks again.

I believe Tony, Norm, and Jim all sell the side exhaust manifold, there may be others also.

Joe, Thanks for clearing that up, cause frankly, I could not remember even though I lived through the "flat top" WC era. I do remember the styled WC's coming through the hood cause that is all we sold. Thanks again. Good Luck! Bill Long

But the 1940 model must have been gasoline only?? not dual/fuel kerosene....right ??

I have a 1950 WD Distillate, Serial No. 40669 and a 1953 WD45 Distillate, Serial No. 151724.
The WD has the muffler hole in the hood, and of course, the starter tank and line. When I got it it had a regular gasoline manifold and a muffler. The hood is original I am pretty sure as the side holes for the starter tank (and power steering tanks) are not round but elongated to be able to get the tank side bolts through the hood without messing up the hood and the muffler hole is too clean to be other than factory.
The WD45 has the side discharge and the starter tank and line. I bought it from the original owner and he said they special ordered it to burn kerosene and it was all original when I got it. This tractor came out of Florida and the salt water did a number on the sheet metal, so I had a new hood made, but I saved the original. It had the elongated side tank hole and no hole for a muffler.
I often wondered why the change from the muffler version on the WD to the side discharge on the WD45, which in my mind is going backwards; that side discharge will make you deaf pretty quickly.
So I looked in the parts book and it shows that all WD's and only WD45's prior to serial number 161825 should have had a side discharge, and that starting with 161826, the muffler.
That would mean my WD is not according to the book. My WD has the KA suffix on the block, and my WD45 has the K suffix on the block, so if Dr. Allis' WD has the muffler, perhaps the book is incorrect. I doubt that a farmer would have gone to the trouble of buying a new hood, manifold cover and muffler, but I suppose a few might have.
I realize this is not helping to clear up the confusion, but that is how I am reading the parts book.

I have a WD45 owners manual (no idea the date it was published) that shows two similar design manifolds; one for kerosene and one for gasoline. Both go up thru the hood with a muffler. Neither were out the side and neither look like any WD/WC manifold.
