Wanted to change the positive ground 24 volt generator out to be replaced by a 24 volt delco alternator. Got mounts all made but belt width is a problem so used the pulley from the generator. The problem is that the diameter of the old pulley is to big and with the reduced speed of a diesel can't get the alternator to perform. Has anyone succeeded in changing to an alternator on the HD11? Or does anyone know where I can get a c belt size pulley with a 5/8 id shaft size?

On my HD5 I used a cast iron pulley from truck alt, machined it out to fit B width belt.
It was about half the diameter of origonal generator pulley .

What particular truck alternator did you get pulley from?

I have a similar problem with the alternator on my D grader. When I posted this question a while ago someone responded that they sell B width sheaves for alternators and someone else said that they split the stamped metal sheave in half and put some washers in between to make it fit a B width belt. I am going to try the later.

Pulley was from 78 GMC with the 427 or 366 with air comp.  Pulley is small diameter with a recess machined into it to attach to alt shaft and allow for nut to fasten to shaft.
It was thick enough and sets forward far enough to allow the larger belt, so belts clear the fan plate on alt.
I believe there is a way to overcome the internal regulator also to excite the stator so it will charge at low RPM. I know on HD5 I have to run engine up to full RPM to get it to kick in but then it will charge at idle after excited.

Thanks a bunch. Yes there is a regulator out there that will fix this problem from idle but as yet I have been unable to track down the company and unfortunately I didn't bookmark it when I read about them. I'll post it if I find it again. Thanks though. I will get one of these pulley's for now.

If it is an alternator with a built in regulator and you are told that they only need one wire connection they do not work well at low rpm. My D grader was set up this way. I got the adaptor for the two unused terminals on the alternator from an auto parts store. One lead connects to the battery terminal on the alternator and the second lead requires a light gage wire to a terminal that senses your battery voltage such as a key switch. Since my engine is a gas engine I connected it to the ignition terminal of my key switch so that it broke the connection when the key was turned off. I had to install a diode in line to prevent the alternor from back feeding voltage to the coil after the ignition switch was turned off. My alternator now starts charging as soon as the engine starts even if it only running at a slow idle.
