My starter would spin the engine very easily and fast.  Today it made a funny noise than a loud bang!!  The nose of the starter broke and the bendix came off the shaft of the starter.  Is this a bad omen?!!!  The engine turns easily with a srewdriver. It is not stuck tight!  How do I remove starter pieces from under the ring gear?  Must I split  the tractor to remove the starter pieces?  Reading this form-- I am wondering if someone could have placed the wrong starter in the D-12.  Any advice and encouragement would be appreciated!!!  Marlyn

Hi Marlyn-

I'm not certain, but I BELIEVE there may be a clutch cover underside of the bellhousing, and you MAY be able to open that up for a look, and perhaps fish out most of the remains.  Obviously, if the engine still turns, the bendix remains aren't jamming it up.

If there IS a cover, but you can't see in at the proper angle, stick a digital camera up there and snap a few pictures, then look.  A magnet on a stick might be the ticket for fishin' out the larger pieces, although it might be a bit frustrating to maneuver.
