I have two issues on my D10 restoration.

1. I set-up the timing per the instructions in the service manual and the tractor seems to run well. I wanted to test the timing so I put a timing light on I cannot see the Fire mark that I am supposed to be seeing. I rotated the distributor both ways to the point that it won't run and still cannot see the mark (which I painted in white to make it most visible). Granted I do not know exactly what 1600 rpm's is but a fast idle should be close. I don't get it.

2. I have a brand new water pump, a brand new temp gauge, brand new radiator and the tractor runs in the red at about 230 degrees. I even took the thermostat out and still it gets up to just over the red mark (220 degrees). I tested the thermostat and it reads a little hot but within about 15 degrees).

You guys have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks

Which hole are you looking thru?

Adjust ignition timing at FULL wide open throttle.

Put an IR thermometer, on various spots on the motor.  The 149 motor has the sending unit right next to the exhaust manifold, its not always accurate.  The IR heat gun can find hot spots.  Sometimes  there can be mineral deposits, inside the block, causing poor coolant flow...

Was the engine tore down and block cleaned?

I am looking through the right hole (left side center). I will try timing at full open throttle. Is there a way to test water flow?

How's this for an idea? If I drill a small hole in a rubber cork and place that in the hole where the heat sensor goes and then put my wife's digital cooking thermometer in there wouldn't that be a good test to the actual temperature?

Jeff,
Try taking the temp gage probe out and testing in a pan of boiling water with a known accurate thermometer beside and see if it reads ok?
Regards,
 Chris

If the timing is off, it can cause the engine to run hot.

The timing was indeed off. I think I am a whole gear tooth off. I spun the distributor about 15 degrees c-clockwise and the fire line showed up and now it runs cool.

Thanks guys :)

Jeff
