After attempting to get this tractor for several years from the owner, (thank goodness it was still local), I was able to get this tractor and bring it home a few weeks ago. Picture to follow from the day we loaded her up. My grandpa bought it back in the day - my dad remembers when the dealer delivered it, and said it was really something back then. My grandpa marveled that it was the "biggest tractor made," no doubt, it was the biggest tractor in the area at that time! He kept the tractor until the late 1980's when be bought a brand-new Deutz-Allis 6260, (he traded his D15 for that tractor, but kept the WD45 for a time). Eventually, he traded it to a local boy for his labor on the farm, by that time my grandpa didn't use it. The man that got it from my grandpa eventually traded it to the last owner, who has owned it for 20 years or so.. For the last 10-15 years, it sat in the edge of the woods, void of any attention. One can see that he took the engine apart recently, in an attempt to get it unstuck before I got it, (the guy is a great guy and neighbor, and said he didn't want to give me a tractor that was locked up), but one piston is still stuck. I have all the parts for the engine, and all the sheet metal. You can see that some of it is in rough shape. I want to preserve as much of the original parts as possible, but I'll definitely need fenders and a radiator, steering wheel, seat and seat assembly, steering assembly, battery box, front wheels, among other things. The point is I FINALLY GOT IT. I've been trying to talk him out of it for years.. I didn't think I'd ever convince him until he called one day and told me that he was ready for me to get it! This can serve as a before picture, it may take a bit of time, but I want it to look showroom new when I'm finished with it. Its retirement will certainly be an easy one, and its been a long time coming. I can't wait to get to work on it. Advice is appreciated, and I'll probably be looking for parts in the near future. We are lucky to have a lot of my grandpa's equipment. We've got his Gleaner K, I've got a 78 Chevrolet truck of his that's being restored, (we took it all the way down to the frame), and his last truck, a 97 Dodge diesel that he bought brand new. We've also got the Deutz-Allis he bought new, but I wanted one of his Allis tractors so very bad. Nothing like preserving em.. That old tractor wouldn't be worth much to most people, but it couldn't be bought from me. And he wasn't using it, that's for sure! Lol. I would have got a running WD45 and traded it to him for it if he'd really needed one. Either way, I got it now. Glad you have it now. Nice to see them back where they are valued. I bet once you get it restored you will Find alot of little things to do with it if only as an excuse to drive it. Take some more photos before you start. I have some from all angles of my d17 when I got it. I haven't restored my d17 but I have done alot of modifications to make it more useful. Sometimes I like to look at the photos to remind me what it was like before I started. My uncle who is still alive and helps me hay has commented that the hydraulics I added sure are handy. I am sure my other uncle and grandfather would have approved of what I added. I really enjoy using the same tractor they used brings back lots of good memories. So my advice is lots of photos right now it looks sad to you I am sjre. But later those photos will be a source of pride as you look at them and remember what you have done to honor your grandfather. |

Thanks guys, yes, Dan, hydraulics were something these tractors and the D series lacked. It wasn't until the D17 IV that the D17 had adequate hydraulics! And you are right, I love using my tractors. Even if I relegate this one to breaking a garden from time to time or running a finish mower, I'll be doing something with it! They're no good to have and no fun if you can't use them from time to time. That's where you get true satisfaction in my book! Congratulations! The family tractor is home! Don't be afraid to take and post lots of pictures as is and when to work on the parts. Lots of folks on here that can throw in their 2 cents.
