I've never actually seen a burned Gleaner. Heard of a couple, but never seen one. Green combines on the other hand....

Their radiator system is a lot of it. The green ones have an air scoop. Basically a pocket with a fan in it. Sucks everything in, plugs up, overheats, fire. The Gleaners have the big fan on the side that self reverses every 10 minutes to blow out the radiator. Then the fan turns back around and tilts down to blow out the engine compartment, before tilting back up and going back to normal operation. That's Gleaner's smart solution to fires.
What did John Deere do? They made factory installed air compressors in the engine compartment an option. Get out of the cab and clean it yourself, if you remember.

A friend just was talking the other day about the high exhaust temps on the JD because of the pollution crap.

Could be. My uncles got lucky. They ordered two 9460R JD tractors the last year they were available without DEF. It was also the last year for the quad range transmission, that they'd been using since the 70's or 80's. They like it, and hate the powerjerk (As do I). The old powershifts of the 80s were great! But the new ones are trash. Gotta bump through ever gear. On the old ones, you go straight from 1 to 8 at the push of the lever. Not on the new ones. You're gonna feel a jerk 8 times if you want to go from 1 to 8.
