My B was running great. Then, it kept stalling after running rough for 30 seconds or so. Now it will pop off, but won't stay running. It is backfiring through the carb a little. Tractor never gave me a problem before. It has a distributor, not a mag. Checked the following: Fuel flow to carb--good. Pulled carb, cleaned jets, set float to spec--good. Checked power to coil and points--good. Changed condenser (with one of unknown quality). Bypassed power to coil--no change. Set timing. I'm stumped. My only two guesses left are: 1. Condenser is bad and old one is bad too. 2. Governor weight flew off? No chunking sound coming from housing. Weird. This tractor always starts quickly and has never given me a problem.

Well does it have spark? When you pull a plug and lay it on the block connected to wire

Lose an intake gasket? got oil pressure?- camshaft drives oil pump Coil gone bad and works only with no compression? gas got water in it? distributor pointer got a crack? cap got moisture in it? Spark yellow? Red? blue? long arc or short? If you just filled it and dumped diesel in it... Just a bunch of thoughts of possibilities... along with a bad condensor. New ones don't last very long these days.

does it restart after it cools off ? If yes, install new coil and condenser.
------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s.

It is a timing issue. The drive pin that holds the gear on the bottom of the distributor may be sheared.

I put a coil on it from another running tractor, but it didn't change a thing.

I'd pull off the valve cover and have a look.

Neighbors gas power water pump was running lousy. Would only run with choke on. The thing was making oil- oil level was rising and thin.
Problem was one of his helpers put a good amount of diesel in the 14 gallon tank. So, engine was not getting enough gas and therefore would only run with choke on as compensating fix. But all that diesel needed a place to go. I guess it washed past rings into the crankcase. Drain tank and refill with gas, cured.
So I say file this one under "fuel not good".

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ran out to the shop and found a new condenser--Not AC, (for an international 404 I used to have) but I tried it. Put it in and she started and ran great again. The condenser in this can't be more 3 months old! Where do you get good condensers? Maybe it's time to convert to electronic?

If you go electronic go negative ground at the same time. The electronics are just more robust in negative ground.
