Ok...so I found out this summer that on the Gleaners (L/M at least) you can adjust the 2 guards over the auger in the bottom of the grain bin to change the unload rate. I ran an M2 for a guy this summer and he had opened both sides up as far as they would go, and the combine unloaded about as fast as you could say "1982 Gleaner M2".  Ok, maybe not that fast, but it was super fast compared to our L3. I checked our L3 out, and they were closed almost all the way, which I guess is why unloading always seemed to take so long.
My question is...what's the point of having those adjustable shields? Is it just to adjust how fast the bin unloads? Is there any other reason?

Thanks

Some seed like oats or grass seed, they need opened up so it will feed out. Beans and corn, they may need shut down to prevent over feeding unloading auger.   MACK

I guess with wheat it may not matter so much?
However, the guy did say you had to run the engine pretty fast when engaging the auger, or else the belt may slip. Not sure if it's because of that, or because the machine is just plain worn out.

Wheat is heavy and hard to auger if the tube is full. In that case it would be good if it was shut down a little. Wheat will run out fast anyway.

Damp wheat will stall the unload auger. Only way to deal with it is to open the clean out, not happy times. Then, shovel, then, swear and repeat. Then, over ride what the Dad says and adjust the guards WAY down. Yell at each other for a while and then keep going... This "working" relationship is part reason why the farm got sold 20 years ago...Trev.

yep...Trev...yer about exactly right....cept I only had myself to yell at and blame! lol my "G"s had the adjustable guards too. dry slick grain can overload the unloading auger, so you want it set low, maybe like 1/3 open. oats and fluffy or damp grain, you need it open more so it doesn't bridge in the bin. the unloading augers were designed by Gleaner to unload at the wide open throttle.
