Was talking to a guy today who has a 160. He said he was mowing the other day when it started sputtering (kinda like a bad miss). He said oil was running out of the cap on top of the valve cover in a pencil thin stream. He checked the oil and it was 3.5 quarts above normal. I don't know what the problem would be. Any of you guys have an idea? He thought maybe there was a seal leaking in the hydraulic pump and that was pushing oil into the engine?
He did say that after he found oil it was leaking oil from the valve cover cap, and started missing, he raised the brush hog and drove home. I figured if the pump was leaking, the hydraulics wouldn't have the pressure to hold the mower up.

The lift pump can leak and fill the crankcase with diesel.

The front seal of the injector pump or a bad lift pump can let diesel down in the crank case too

When you say lift pump...is that the same as the hydraulic pump? If so, how could it let diesel into the crankcase? Thanks

The lift pump looks just like the fuel pump on older cars. is located on the right side of the diesel engine facing towards the front of the tractor. it pumps fuel from tank through the fuel filter to the injector pump. If its dia-fram leaks then the fuel goes right in the crank case

If that much diesel leaked into the crankcase, he should be able to smell the diesel in the engine oil, and see that it is thinned out a lot. And the fuel pump and main injection pump are the usual suspects as stated.
The main hydraulic pump could leak also. If this is the case, the oil would not be so thinned out.
If it were coolant, 3.5 quarts (that must be a dipstick guess?) is half the system, you would see the radiator fluid low, and the engine would have blown by now.
