I bought this 5040 sitting in a field froze up. Rebuilt motor and all seemed good. Have used it a little but now I want to put it to work . The problem is that the 6 speed is good in first, second, and third, low reverse but when I go to 4,5,6 I can travel on level or uphill no problem, but if I travel down even a small grade it pops out of gear, the gear shift does not move but theres a grinding sound and "free wheeling".  Also I cannot get "high" reverse . I'm not sure if the gear shift lever is original, the guy I bought it from did a lot of hokey things to this unit , the ball on the end looks round, is there an  adjustment? any ideas ?

If you don't get any help on this forum, you may want to try the other forum under other classics.  The 5040 was not built by AC but by UTB/Universal.  Most UTB's in the US were sold by Long and you may get help from Long users.  The Longs had the separate shift pattern for the high low gears that the 5040 has.  I currently have a 5040 that has a three range shift so you have hi/lo and creep (9 forward gears).
