Hi everyone. I have a 52' CA and replaced the brake drums and pads on both sides. Put it all back together and now when I put it in gear it doesn't move forwards or backwards? Press the clutch in and it does into gear fine but when you let it out you can still hear the gears moving underneath you and PTO will engage fine. What could be the problem here? I looked at the hand clutch once more and it seems fine also.

Steve...Charlie's talking about the splines in the hand clutch disc being "shelled" out or no more splines! LOL! Rick

Or it's lost the fiction to move the tractor. If you replaced the brake drum on the right side, you had to have had the hand clutch apart. Something didn't go back together the way it came apart maybe?

I can jack up that right tire let off the clutch and it will turn it but I can stop the tire with my hand. I'll take it all apart again tonight and show you some pictures of the clutch discs. Thanks again everybody.

Did you replace the Half Moon woodruff key between the Clutch pack and outer pinion shaft? They can slip out when trying to re-install the clutch pack.

Could also be that the material is too thin on the hand clutch disc. I have seen them come in to me with splines so thin, you could shave with them! Now that's worn out! LOL! Rick

Would anyone have a picture of what the worn or shelled out clutch discs look like compared to a good one?

Based on the description, the clutch was working before the brakes were fixed; that's why I would suspect the Woodruff key falling out of place as the 1st culprit. It is also possible that the clutch actuator needs to be adjusted; perhaps it got tightened up to the point that the plates cannot come together; check out the clearance between the T/O bearing on the actuator and the clutch; it should be 0.020-0.040"...use the cog wheel to adjust the clearance. This is an easy check and can be done prior to pulling the axle. You can go to the Knowledge section and view a procedure on rebuilding the CA axle clutch, it contains many pics of the process.
