This will make me sound pretty stupid, but how do you properly use shutters? I started with them shut until it got to temp, then I opened them. After a few minutes the temp was down in the "cold" zone. I shut them again till it was in the green, then I only opened them 1/3 open. That only made it get cold slower.
What are you supposed to do?

Your on the right track. Just don't open them so much until you are working the tractor and the temp starts into the red, then start to open them slowly until you get the opening and the temp balanced. LOL Bob

The main purpose for shutters, I think, was to get the engine up to operating temp quickly in freezing cold weather and maintaining temp at a desired level.
In hot weather just leave them wide open.

The proper way to use them is to open them up and then install a thermostat if the tractor doesn't have one! In all seriousness they were useful on an engine burning low octane fuel or an engine running light loads in very cold weather. Orherwise they were used as you are doing in engines that didn't have a thermostat.

For almost 20 years that's how my CA was run. You just have to get a feel for how far open to run them. Light loads like just riding about one or two turns open was all mine needed. When the water pump started leaking a year ago I finally put a thermostat in it.
