I just picked up my new ( to me )Gleaner f2 combine, 4 cylinder, long walker, hydraulicfold auger. It came with a floating header but no auto header height. How would I run this header? Just keep it up a bit above the ground?

I Have another early model, f2 that I have been fixing but its not ready yet. It has the 4 row narrow black header and a rough flex head for parts.

Any other input about these machines would be great, How many acres would you run with these machines? Or if you had one when new how much did you do with it?

We own an F2 that we bought from a great member on here. We harvest about 125 acres with it, and it's plenty of machine for that. We run a 15' grain header, and that keeps it happy. The 433I is a great little engine- hardly uses fuel.

Our header doesn't have any of the extra controls, so that's how we run it.

Other than that, they're great machines- easy to service, efficient, and reliable. If I had to give you pointers, I'd recommend bolting a step inside the grain tank- it's miserable to get out of those, and to consider cutting a piece of plywood to make a diverter to slow the rate of grain into the unloading auger.

Yes Me and my dad replaced the floor in the work in progress machine. He removed the auger and we cut out the old and replaced it and riveted in new galvanized steel. It wasn't fun to do but Now its done right.

The good one I just bought fired right up for me and ran good all the way home about 2 hours. I like the gleaners because they are simple to work on. And anybody who says its because you have to work on them all the time is wrong, Every color breaks down so I would rather have a simple machine.

Will The floating header make a big difference in cutting uneven ground?

Also could I use the floating header to cut my 8 acres of winter wheat?

I ran a floating a floating head for years without the automatic header height control working. You'll get a feel for it. I'd set it to where it just touches the ground that way it can rise over any obstruction easily. As far as wheat the floating head is designed to be "locked up" where it won't float. If you look under it you will see pieces that look kinda like a ] they bolt to the floating bars. If you take them off and push the cutter bar up they will be reinstalled holding the bar up. I think there's 5 on a 13' head.

okay I will check for the pieces. It would be nice to be able to use it for wheat too.
