Posting for a friend of mine who has a D17.

It's a 1958 D17, and the PD doesn't snap into each range. Just kinda slides in. He's thinking it may slip when it gets a big load on it. Apparently there is a way to shim it up to make it snappy. Could someone explain the process? He's read the book, but it's still over our heads.
Thanks

Look in the knowledge based section. There is a video of it.

Thanks! I found it. That will surely be a great help.

Creston - what is not explained in that video is if the PD has worn out rollers and pre-load plate ramps, shimming it back up to spec might not be enough and could make it worse if it pops out of range.   If the PD pop out of range, esp. the high range, but won't slip if you hold it in, then likely new rollers and a preload plate is going to be needed in the PD to make it right.   Mike

I would bet money it is just the rollers and the plate worn. My D14 wouldn't even stay in on the low side. I built up the worn plate and put in new rollers. It takes a little tinkerin' to get it to snap in just right but it can be done. You may be better off to buy a new plate or a good used one. JP
