Have a leaking inner planetary seal on the fwd on my 8070(the one just after the ujoints). Based on the service manual and the person I spoke with, it will be an involved job. I was also warned that the big nut that holds the hub on can be a pain and takes a special tool. Anyone have pics of this tool? Or is there another way to get that nut off? Already have the seal, just needing to make sure I have tools so downtime is minimal. Any other suggestions/advice welcome! EDIT: It is the large seal on the inner hub that is leaking, not the one at the ujoint itself. ~Warren

| If its the input seal leaking behind u-joints like you are describing, you can replace that without removing planetary, unhook tie rod, turn assembly to one side, remove u-joint assembly and you can slide the input shaft out and replace seals. |

My description is pretty bad... I keep forgetting that seal by the ujoint itself.... Unfortunately the leaking seal is the next one on the hub  Edited original post, thanks for the clarification.~Warren

I borrowed the tool from my local dealer. The service manager told me I would likely have to cut it off with the torch...long storey....I had to cut it off with the torch as some one used red Loctite and a lot of it to hold the nut in place...the nut cost about three times the price of the seal, and they had it in stock! Tool looks like a truck axle nut socket but round and has three or four pins sticking out of it if my memory is correct |

Use a punch and hammer to remove. Then when you have the nut off build a socket for it. ------------- 180 with a turbo and 460 loader. |

| Threads are a friction fit. Something like 12 tpi on the nut, 12 1/2 on the hub. Makes for a REAL tight fit, Will fight you both off and on, but won't never come off on its own. Do not remove the dust shields unless absolutely necessary. They are staked on and a b!tch to put back on without warpage. Made my own tool from heavy wall pipe to fit on an impact wrench. Sorry, no pics. |
