Do I have to remove pan before replacing front plate, if not please explain? I suspect this has been discussed in the past?? Newbie here but have enjoyed the site in the past. Thanks Clarkvg |

you take a complete motor with pan installed, THEN mount the front plate. It slides over the 4 big studs ....... why do you have an oil pan concern ? ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Did it leak out from around the cover or from around the crankshaft seal? I'm not disagreeing with what Steve said, but I put mine on backwards of what he said, and it hasn't leaked so far.

The C tractor does not have the axle plate as the B does. But if you're really asking about needing to remove the pan before the timing cover, yes you do. There is a stud into the angle on the back of the timing cover.

If by "plate" you mean the timing gear cover, you have to align the cover to the crankshaft. There are no dowel pins to center it on the crank so you have to do that, one way or another. The easiest way is to make up a sleeve that just fits over the crankshaft and slip fits into the seal bore. Use the bushing to line it up, tighten the bolts and install the seal after removing the bushing.

| History, the front crankshaft seal was leaking. The replacement seal was the smaller dimension one. The replacement was a like a bearing seal and it also leaked. Then I took the place off a b and had it bored out so I could use the double seal which is designed for this application on my c. The plates appear the same except it now leaks under the angle iron, so is there a gasket or is each plate custom fitted between the angle iron and the pan. Also where can I get the plate and governor gasket without buying the entire kit, I may need a couple of them the way things are going? |

OK. you are talking about the front timing gear cover... You remove the plate and clean all surfaces. Install the seal into the plate while on the bench. Look at the plate, it seals on top of the pan I believe... You will need to clean that area, replace the cork gasket, or buildup a new layer of sealer (RTV) for the plate angle to seal against.. Don't go overboard with the RTV... Slide the plate into position and let the crank seal center the plate. Make sure the plate is sealed good onto the top of the oil pan with the RTV...Now install the bolts... If it still leaks, take the pan off, install the plate, then new gasket and oil pan install LAST. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Thanks, I tried to post while I was out of town via Version but it wouldn't post. Anyway I took the pan off and installed the front plate then the pan with cork gasket. No leaks!! Thanks again, Clark |
