816's were a bit of an oddity, they were a integral frame unit, with a Perkins 248 cu. in. 83 HP @2500 rpm.  Maybe something else of the era used that engine, but AFIK, no AC motor will bolt right up...

That 248 cu. in. Perkins is the very same block as the 236 and they are quite common. If you get a hold of a 236 and put it in you would only notice the power difference in hard loader work or driving up a hill in 4th gear. Unless the block is bad in this 816 the 248 wouldn't be bad to rebuild. These were impressive backhoes - I have had two of them.
