Subject: 6 Bolt wheels on "D" series ???

When did Allis start putting 6 bolt front wheels on the "D" series ???

D15 II year and serial # ?

D17 Year and serial # ?

Update: D15 S/N 22414 and up (which is mid year 1966) came with 6 bolt
wheels, Per AGCO "on line" parts book. This info is analogous
with our forum member input. Thanks Fellas

D17 S/N not clarified or accurate for this topic in the AGCO
"on line" parts book.    D17 or D17IV.

Anyone have a hard copy of the parts book. Maybe it will have
accurate S/N info on this subject.

The only ones I ever seen with 6 bolt wheels were on series 4 D17s. We have a 1966 Series 2 D15 and it has 5 bolt wheels.

My 66 D15 II has 6 bolt front hubs.  There is no serial number break for this change.  Late 1965 and 1966 seems to be the time that they switched to 6 bolts based on my research.

My 66 D15II is my latest and the only one I have with 6.
65 D17DIV has 5 bolt, 66 gas has 6.

I have a series IV D17 serial# 82057 that came with 5 bolt hubs. I changed it to 6 bolt about 10 years ago. Also have serial#'s 85049 & 88695 and they both had 6 bolt hubs went I bought them. Hope that helps.

My 65 and 66 series 4's have 5 bolt hubs. My 67 has 6 bolt. I have not found a serial reference showing when the change was made.
From what i have noticed the change looks to have been made sometime in 66 for the 17's

Sometime in 1966 seems to be the change to the 6 bolt.

However lets keep searching for printed information that supports this finding.

Serial # 42001 is the first series III in 1962 and cannot be correct for 5 bolt to 6 bolt change. As there are many tractors above that serial number with 5 bolt front wheels.
Confirms another inaccuracy in our parts books.   :-)

Lets keep searching.

Not to start a war, but I am not convinced the D15II originally came with 6 bolt hubs. We have two in our family that don't. My dad bought the 67 D15II in 73 and later sold it to his brother so we know most of its history. I bought mine from the estate of the original owner. ???

I have a 64 D-17 Ser IV and a 64 D-15 Ser II and they both have 5 bolt hubs . Not sure why the change from 5 to 6 bolts , little stouter maybe .
Have also seen the brake latch on the D-17 SerIV and the Ser II D-15 being different on some. Newer models have the ratchet style and older have the pie shaped brake hold .thought it had to do with snap coupler vs factory 3 point but have seen all combinations .Imagine as the new parts came they would use the old ones first .Maybe even find a box of parts during a run and throw them in the mix .

The very late production of the D15 did have the six bolt fronts.

Just a thought, do you think maybe they changed and put 6 bolt hubs  on when a loader was put on the tractor?

Posted By: Pat the Plumber CIL

They were on all of them after 66 , Imagine most were being used with loaders so they beefed them up .Does anyone know of 5 bolt hubs that were a problem with a loader ? Always thought they were plenty strong , an engineer must have thought different .

My 66 is serial number 21883 with 5 bolt hubs. Curious of the serial numbers of 66 tractors with 6 bolt hubs. This may tighten down the break from 5 to 6.

Dad use to crack the wheels using a loader on his '61 D17 with 5 bolts. His fix was to put heavy duty pickup snow tires on it and he never broke another wheel. If that hadn't worked I imagine he would have either traded to something newer or switched over to a 6 bolt hub. The 5 bolt wheels were a problem with loader work.

Can a WD45 be switch to a 6 bolt hub?

Pat dad had a loader on his WD45 for 20+ years, narrow front, never broke a wheel. I broke 1 on his 58 D17 with wide front mowing hay. heard it popping when I came in for supper. My series 4 diesel has 6 bolt wheels ssn 88427.

The strength of a rim depends on the thickness of the steel and the number of bolts. In a 2013 Shoup catalog ( http://www.shoupparts.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.shoupparts.com ) 15 x 5 rims are rated at 1800 pounds for both 5 and 6 bolt centers. 15x 6 rime are rated at 1800 pounds for 5 bolt and 3300 pounds for 6 bolt. In my vintage Baum Hydraulics catalog ( http://www.baumhydraulics.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.baumhydraulics.com ) section F there are few rims, 15x6 5 bolt are rated at 2200 pounds and 15x6 6 bolt are rated at 3300 pounds.

Both of these companies sell a fairly large selection of hubs. If I wanted to change a hub from 5 to 6 I would determine the Timken part numbers for the bearings and look for hubs with the same bearings and bearing spacing or the same spindle dimensions. I know when I broke a hub on my 2000 plow that both Shoup and Baum Hydraulics had a hub that fit. I believe that Allis engineers would have bought stock hubs rather than fabricate them since they seemed to have done that with engines in early tractor production and likely the front rims were standard (and there is an SAE standard for implement rims) implement rims that they could buy from multiple sources easier than they could make them. I know the rims on my MF-135 and that came with my 4020 were standard implement rims. I have 11.00-16 on the 4020 to protect the spindles from plow furrows and to give better support with a loader where the tall wide tires don't smash holes in soft ground like the stock tires did.

It is possible to buy custom rims today, places like Miller Tire, Gemplers, Wold, Unverforth, and the rim shop at the coop in Radcliffe, Iowa. They probably can make a 5 bolt rim stronger than the standard 5 bolt rim but the number of bolts could be a limit on the maximum possible rim load rating.

Its likely that the tire size needs to go bigger to really increase the front end load rating and then the spindles may be the weak part with 6 volt rims and hubs. I'd think the latest part lists for the D15 would show whether the 6 bolt hubs used the same spindles as the 5 bolt hubs and what serial number they were changed, unless for some time period the 6 bolt rims were buyer options.

I have a D15II that is from the last year of production that has the 6 bolt front hubs. It is possible that in earlier years that tractors could have been ordered with a HD front axle that would have had the 6 bolt front hubs.

I would guess standard judging from the breakdown I saw. Personally, I would rather have the 6 bolt hubs and wheels.

Are they just D17 hubs on a 15 front end or has anyone noticed anything else different from a six lug front to five lug. Didn't know if they made them with an extra support or anything for strength.

Just to ad this since they are a D series.
The early d21's have 6 bolt hubs instead of 8 bolt.

Another interesting hub senario. We have acorrding to the parts book the first UC to have 5 bolt hubs or 6. I cant remember which just found it neat.

This was put to bed years ago, it might help you guys out, the D15II, D17VI tractors at a ser # might be ordered with the 5 or 6 bolt hubs just like wide, narrow fronts, lift hitch, spin-out rear wheels, lights, PD or tripe of tires,on and on down a list and it was just one of a long list of things your dealer put on the order list at the time tractor was ordered. So you might see a 5 bolt hub on a tractor built after that ser# if a tractor built  with a 6 bolt hub.
