Looked at a B on my way home from the cabin. The owner was pretty upfront about some issues it has. The issues are-a ring gear and a clunk in the right rear. The clunk he said was only noticeable in 3rd gear. How hard is it to replace the ring gear and get into the rear.

Ring gear easy. Tractor will have to be split in half tho. Pry off the old one and heat up the new one with a torch and tap on. The clunk in the rear end may not be anything to worry about. I don't use mine except for when I travel between the lot up the road and my place that I mow. Even then I could get by without it if it came down to it. With out hearing the sound its hard to tell if it much to worry about. I would at least look into it tho to make sure it won't cause further damage/problems.

I assumed the ring gear since those are very common to need replaced.

I had a high  school teacher that was a firm believer why not to use the word ASSUME, he liked to spell it out. He did say right rear.

I am with AJ when I assume, as it does say ring gear...and a clunk in the rear end. If I am going to assume, that would be my guess.

Sorry starter ring gear, and a clunk in the right rear. Why do you heat the ring gear? I have read some other posts that said the same thing.

the ring gear is a shrink fit onto the flywheel.. If you press it on, you might scrape up the interfierence fit. Put it in the over for 30 minutes or so, then drop it on and tap down into position .... no bolts. You can smack the old one off with a hammer.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

clunk in rear end could be bearing in final drive... hard to break a gear tooth. I would look into that if it makes too much noise. Pry back and forth on the brake drum thru the access hole to see if it has any endshake. Jack up the tire and try to wiggle the wheel / hub/ shaft and see if anything moves... Might be as simple as loose locks on the hub to rim clamps.

Clunk in rear could be as simple as a loose or worn wheel

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

That was my thought, too! Does it clunk when you're towing it? I have a B that needs some wheel work (in my spare time...).

As stated Mike, the ring gear is simple........except for the heck you're gonna get into for the wife's oven....
The rim on my C was the problem on mine when I got it. It had a definite clunk. It dropped off when I first got it home. Got a new rim and that fixed the problem.

The rim was rusted through in one spot and you couldn't even tell it until it happened. The clamp just pushed inside of the rim and poof.....off she come. Didn't break anything else, thank God.

I stopped and looked at the tractor a little closer. It does need a new starter ring gear. But my concerns are-the noise in the right rear, when you rock it there is a sound like gears clunking. Also a clutch issue. I will explain best I can. Looking in the clutch inspection hole there was a collar or something with a grease zerk on it. If the zerk was pointed down you had good clutch but if it rotated he would have to take a screwdriver and rotate it back to a down position.  Hope I explained well enough that the more knowledgable folks know what I am talking about.

So, when you split it to put the new ring gear on, plan on a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Sounds like a problem with the throw out carrier? http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=278" rel="nofollow - Rick can get you everything you need for the clutch for a REAL reasonable price.

Hope you can see your way clear to "rescue" that B.
Does not sound like too much with the clutch and ring gear.
I could not imagine what is needed for the rear end.  Frankly, I cannot remember a problem we had in that area.  The rear end and transmission were overbuilt and offered no problems.  Hope it is easier than we think.
Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!

He has another offer supposedly. That guy is a neighbor of his and wants to part it out. I haven't done a clutch since my ole 72 chev. W will see what happens. Supposed to call him at the end of the week. Think he is holding out for a little more cash.

Seems like I remember that the axle shaft splines can get worn on the B. This could cause a clunk, especially if they jumped a tooth now and then.

The good news is that parts, new and used, are plentiful for the B.

I wish you were closer. I have a complete rear end for a B that will probably end up getting scrapped.

Here is what happened. He said he has decided to keep the tractor! I think good for me. I will just keep looking. Thanks for all the input on my questions.

Please forgive my ignorance I am new to this. After 42 years of looking, I am 98% sure I have my Grandfathers 1947 AC model C. I have to replace the 5 bolts that actually hold the rear tire onto the tractor. I took one of the nuts into several stores and they can not match them up.  Please let me know, what size, length, thickness, type of threads, etc.  James

James, did you go to a tractor parts dealer or to a hardware or auto parts store? The kids at a lot of the auto parts stores can't find anything these days without a computer. Those nuts are pretty common and should be easy to find. Sorry but I don't know the size and thread pitch off the top of my head. The suppliers that advertise on here and support this Forum are good sources for Allis parts.

Buy the tractor!  My first farm sized tractor was a B and I will never get rid of it.  The little Bs are a great little machine.

I did the clutch on my B back in the spring and it was the first one I have ever done.  Very easy to do.  Split the tractor and it is right there.  I used heavy duty uni-strut as legs for the back and supported the front with an engine hoist.  The flywheel and rig gear are right there also.

I suggest that you order an alignment tool for installing the clutch.  It made life so much easier.

Good luck.
