Putting new rings in an HD6 that was mildly stuck.

New Hastings ring set has 4 rings while the pistons have 5. Obviously the newer versions had one less oil control ring.

The question is which slot to leave empty (I'm guessing the lower one) or do I get more oil rings and run 2 since the piston is designed for it. The lowest ring had no expander and the upper one has a spring expander. The design of the oil rings old and new is identical.

You can purchase individual rings. You could leave the one old oil control ring in the pistons. The rings in position 4 & 5 are different so it depends which type you got with your set. Position 4 is a 3 piece ring. Position 5 is a cast one piece ring.

I'll have to look into getting individual rings.

This one had the one piece oil rings in both positions. The new sets from Hastings have the one piece oil rings also. Not saying it was built correctly.

The engine was rebuilt some time in the 90's and has maybe 100hrs on it. Shame it got rained in. No detectable ridge in the cylinders and bearings look excellent.
