What would cause a high charge rate (on the ammeter)? Short background - Put a new clutch and seals in the 185D so everything was unhooked. Regulator was buzzing initially and then didn't show any charge. Replaced regulator. Ammeter then shows charge but higher the rpm the higher the charge. After a couple runs the battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge. Replaced battery. Ammeter shows high charge (30 at idle, 60+ above about 16-1700 rpm) I must have something wrong. Don't think it affects it but the tach quit working. Any thoughts

Bad Regulator? ? It happens all the time. Probably came form a 3rd world country and made by an 8 year old boy. Lol

A good alternator and regulator should charge the same from just above idle to full engine speed and should taper with time. It doesn't take a day to charge a typical battery at 60 amps from starting, more like 20 minutes. The tolerances by the SAE standard on the magnetic regulators was poorer than was good for battery life. My first care with an alternator had a magnetic regulator that stuck on and started frying lights and the battery. I built a solid state one about 1975 and didn't have a problem again. Today we use a lot of Delco 10-SI alternators with built in regulators on tractors.
Check the charging voltage and the battery water. I think you will find the alternator trying to put out more than 14.2 volts varying with engine speed and the water disappearing from the battery.
