What are the advantages of a trail type mower over a fully mounted mower? 82T vs 80R.

I might be wrong about this but the only good thing I see about the trail mower is it's faster to install and remove off the tractor, the biggest neg of using a trail mower is in heavy grass the mower will try to trail sideways more than a mounted mower will.
I have a 82-T, 80-R and #7 mowers and use the good old #7 most of time.

What about a side mount? 80S?

The side mounts like the #80-S and even the newer #82-S are the best for use, no looking back behind you like the rear mount mowers are, but they both can be the hardest to install and remove. The 80-S is installed a lot like your 80-R will. If you have a tractor to install a side mount mower and just leave on it I'd go with a side mount mower, if not might be best to just stay with your 80-R.

Rusty I see no advantage of 1 over another, I have used all 3 types. I prefer a trail type, easy to hook up.

I've always wanted a trailer type just for that reason!

I can spin that 80R on a gnats a$$, around fence posts, telephone poles, equipment and etc. If I get in a bind on a hill, I can hit whichever brake appropriate and I am out of danger ASAP ( don't ask how I know this ). You will never get a trailering sickle mower nowhere near as nimble as a mounted one. That also includes the side mount.      Also, a narrow front end is the only way to go.

I agree with that!

We never sold a trailer type mower but I always thought the advantage of a trail mower was the fact that you could easily hook it to any PTO tractor you had without a problem.  In fact I recommended that when selling hay rakes.
Good Luck!

I have a number 7 trailer mower. It is easy to hook up, if you read the book! :)

I kept putting the trailer mower hitch pin in upside-down until I read the book. That made a big difference.

I did not release the spring that would allow the tongue of the mower to come down. I was trying to put my weight on it to get it hitched up.. If you release that spring on the side of the mower, it is easy to hook up.
I found that out when I read the book!

The 82T with the off set axle will corner better than any of them so you don't have to pull out and go back into the hay saves a lot of time and effort.I've used them all side mounted, mounted on rear and trailer and I like the trailer better.AC mowers cut great but the problem now is parts for them which is why I switched over to a New Holland
456 trailer type mower very similar to the 82T in design and no parts problems.

Only problem, in my book, with the 82T, was you have to jack up that left wheel, to slide the sickle out...

Reading the comments, I can see the pros and cons of each version. We've got a New Idea 30 since new and it did all of the hay cutting on the farm until we got a New Holland 477 haybine. It is still on the farm but only used for ditch mowing, fence line trimming, and cutting the marshy areas.

I bought a 80-R3 off craigslist in the fall of 2014. I used several times last year but still am learning how to adjust and run it. It is handy being attached to the tractor but am "fumbling" with the attaching and unattaching of the unit. That can be a subject for a future post.
