Hi. Walked out to find the D17 engine with chocolate oil upon checking the dipstick. Drained off about 3 cups. Going to run diesel in it to clean out the rest sticking around. How long is safe to run the engine to clean it out? 2-3 minutes? Thanks. Jim Don't know yet or where the water came from. Water does come in the exhaust when it rains and a can over the end.

| You should be fine for no longer than that. Just listen to the engine and if you're not hearing any strange sounds let it run longer. I f you put in a qt. of oil (cheap) you can run it longer and get it just as clean. Try to run the engine at the smoothest idle possible to keep any strain on the engine down. What is the reason that the oil or water got where it was not supposed to? Might be better to fix that problem before cleaning. JMO Hope you have a simple fix and able to have $$$$$ left for another project. Leon R Cmo |

| I used a product called flushing solvent after having a brand new rebuilt get antifreeze in the crankcase. It did an incredible job. I ran the engine for an hour or so after putting it in the oil then changed oil and filter again. I checked it after it sat for a couple days later and there was no antifreeze came out the drain plug when I loosened it, just clean engine oil. The flushing solvent was made in by a company in Pennsylvania, I just can't remember the name of it. I'll look when I go over to the shop later and post the manufacturer. |

| I used to do the 5 minute motor flush drain one quart out and put the 5 minute motor flush in. Run engine at idle for 5 minutes.that was what the instructions on the can said. If you have any anti freeze in the oil I'd drain it and put fresh in before flushing the engine then drain it and put new oil in again. Anti freeze will eat your bearings and I dought water is any better . At least diesel has some lubrication on its own and will mix with the oil while cleaning the engine out. |

The water may be seeping in at the muffler seams. There are engine oil flushes that you can run for longer than a few minutes. AMSOIL makes one that you add to the oil and run for 30 minutes after warmup. Drain the oil, fill to one quart below full with cheap oil, add one quart of engine oil flush, run the engine until it is warmed up and then for 30 minutes after that. Change the filter before and after the flush. |

| I had a cup seal go bad on my dorF 961 and ran it until the crankcase was dumping diesel mixed oil. That was five or six years back or longer. Didn't seem to hurt the oil pressure with good oil so I assumed it didn't hurt the bearings much. |

| I just noticed your base is El Rino and I instantly recalled a little exciting experience I had on the west edge of town. Heading east, myself and about four other trucks were slipping along at a pretty good clip when I whipped out to pass a truck. It was a dark night but I can still see that little light blue '66 Ford pickup staring at me eye ball to eye ball, and closing fast. Getting on the brakes as hard possible I quickly determined it was time to take evasive action, so down in the median I went with one or two behind me. With the dirt and sand flying we all managed to hang on and missed the pickup then pulled back up on the highway. Looking back in my mirror I saw that the pickup was now on his proper side and heading west. Well, there was nothing to do but catch a gear and head for Missouri. Leon R Cmo |

| I run my engines only 2-3 minutes on straight diesel, idle only, DON'T REV IT UP! be sure to use a clean filter when doing this, then change it again afterwards. |

Update: Ran two flushes with the diesel at idle and got the 2nd round coming out a lot cleaner/clearer, but still some color in it. Changed the filter and added Mystic 15w/40 full synthetic oil and opened 'er up for a half minute to watch oil pressure rise up to the "M" and listen to her purr. No more strange noises than normal. The owner commented that it even sounded better, and started easier, than when they got it as they went to immediately using it fast and furious but keeping any eye on the fluid levels and this was the first time that they'd seen the oil like that in the tractor. It had always been clear to black from the use. Went to running the tractor at about half throttle driving around to do what we needed to do here and idle when stopped while we messed with an implement. Temp came up to normal and stayed there as did the oil stay clear and within the "FULL" range. So, with today's results, I think that we got it squared away and pretty well cleaned up. I think that it was rainwater that somehow found it's way down there as about 3 cups of water came out clear and not green from antifreeze, which, the coolant level was not low and we could see it in the top of the radiator just below the neck. Checked the oil again just before dark after shutting down and sitting for a few minutes and the oil was just as clean and clear as it went in. Earlier today while the hood was off, we clamped a piece of flashing around the muffler, with enough overlap, in such a way as to make a skirt around the neck of the exhaust so as to totally shed the water off of it. We'll see how this goes after Sunday night and all day Monday rains go. And then off & on the rest of this coming week. I'll bet that I don't have any water in it this time!
