Nice looking tractor, for sure. I would say it had been painted, due to the overspray seen (shifter boot & gauge), but still a darn nice piece.

Just curious, how do the rear tires look like a factory install. I mean, how would you tell the difference?

That is a great looking 17. Makes mine look like crap in a mitten!:) But I did hear mine run and most of the systems are working. I would guess that tractor brought $3,000 + due to the good condition and the model? Just a guess. If it did not run that might have held the price down. But a very nice tractor. Now does it have power steering? May be different set up than my old 58? Regards, Chris

Yes, the series IV has a different PS set up. It has a small pump above the generator on the left side of the tractor. You can see it in the picture. That tractor looks too good to be original - not a scratch on it. I would guess it to be an older repaint that had seen very little use. It looks like someone used a bolt and nut to attach the clutch rod to the pedal - a common wear spot. Maybe the tach quit working at 1300 hours? Still a very clean tractor from the pictures. I would not kick it out of my barn!

Clutch pedal was in position like it was pushed down. Would not move very far in either direction. Believe mice filled the clutch cavity. I tried to get info from the auctioneer but they were busy and could not talk. Tractor looks like it was the only thing that the guy took care of. If it was repainted they did a good job. Still kicking myself for not sticking around . Anybody spot the eye lids on the lights.

The shade of orange on the block doesn't seem to quite match the rest of the tractor either; could be the light, ..... and if its wasn't repainted, that means it still has its original coil too....I do see other signs that it was, at the very least, touched up here and there over the years. Original Persian Orange II seems like it should appear a little bit more on the reddish side than this......Factory or not, its still a super straight machine. Someone really loved it ; but then it seems like it sat for a good bit.
Also note the AC emblem above the grill was replaced with an earlier style logo one.

It's an early Series IV so the emblem above the grill is likely original. Very nice tractor. Around here it's a $4500-5000 tractor.

With the headlight shields and the earlier style emblem, that makes it a 1964 Series IV model tractor. No headlight shields on 65 models and the emblem changed in late 65/early 66. The arrows pointing on the dash are for the light fuse and the hydraulic pressure indicator light. These changes came about with the series III model. Earlier tractors did not have these.

The silver border can be found on series III models. Neighbor has a beautiful completely original Series III diesel with the silver border decals.

Thats a nice Series IV. As far as the paint or hours being original thats hard to tell by the pictures. First off I would say there should be foil back decals on it? Not 100% sure on that. But, I am sure there would not be a haze of orange on the instrument panel. Look around the gauges, you will see it. Also, most low hour tractors like that will have more visible engine turning on the panel around the gauges.
How did the steering wheel look? Thats always a good indicator on wear.

My Series IV is SN80314 making it a late 65. I don't remember it having the headlight eyebrows as a kid . It did still have both wheel and nose emblems with the starburst logo but the decal on the back of the seat was the new triangle logo. I put aftermarket eyebrows on when I fixed it up in 2006. Mike
PS. Edit to add it had 5 bolt fronts.

I have a nice original D-17 IV diesel serial 83780 making it a 1966. No eyebrows, triangle logos, 6 bolt front wheels. I'd like to know exactly when they changed to 6 bolt fronts on the D-17 IV's and D-15 II's. As was said the chrome outline on the decal was Series III and early D-15 II's.

mostly my point about orange everywhere is from days at least through WD45's when the tractor was assembled and then EVERYTHING got sprayed.Plug wires,"boots" of all shapes, steering wheels, switches genny&starters.Even the rubber tips on throttle & hyd levers. Can't imagine they changed their ways much through the D series.

I was at the sale and stayed til the equipment was sold, we bought the 1 row AC subsoiler.
The D17 brought $4900. It ran like a top, but the clutch was seized due to a mouse nest in the bellhousing is what they told everyone. I heard that it was original tinwork that hadn't been painted and the chassis had and I heard it was all original, don't know for sure.
The 2 bottom plow brought $425, and the rear blade brought over $300

Calvin, my neighbor has a mid 1965 D17 IV (we sold it to him) and it still had the 5 bolt hub. My 1966 D15 II built around April or May has the 6 bolt hubs (and the triangle emblem). Hope this helps narrow things down.
