I hooked my 6080 to a rented Haybuster 107C no-till dril from my local USDA Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to over-seed a pasture lot with rye grass. ..the other day. The manual indicates that you can seed perennial rye grass from the legume box. However the rye grass "bridged" in about 65% of the seed tubes. I looked at using the grain box..which is used for "fluffy" grass seed, grain and believe it or not, millet... but decided not to.   I digress... anyone have any experience with the Haybuster 107C drill?  I called up the SWCD and told them to take it to the next farmer on the list after trying it for a few a few hours.. I just couldn't get the rye to flow through all the tubes.... it seemed like it was the same tubes that plugged up. I asked the SWCD folks that picked it up if anyone else had complained.. after some prodding they admitted that at least on two occasions a farmer had complained of the seed bridging in the clear supply tubes under the legume box.  I took one of the offending tubes off and checked it out. It seemed that some fine material.. yellow substance..  .perhaps from treated seed had adhered to the sides of the clear plastic tube..causing a drag?? As i don't use treated seed (I'm organic) I'm just guessing.

I have had seed bridging before on my grain drill's  legume feeder tubes... but a shot of compressed air at the beginning of the season clears that up quite fast... gets the cobwebs out. The 107c tubes appear clear of cobwebs and other foreign material except for the residue.

thanks

A lot of no-till seeders have grass seed listed in the chart for the legume box but I have never been able to get grass seed to go thru it. I just use the big seed box with no trouble even without an agitator. There's probably no setting listed on the chart for the big box so you have to use the "WAG"(wild ass guess) method and hope it comes out close.

Thanks Ky.Allis. Took a long look at the unit and it appears that the legume box delivery system has been modified to place the legume/grass seed between the coulters....much too deep for "grass" seed.... and not behind the tilled ground where it can be pressed into the soil by the press/packer wheels...as the equipment photo shows. The explanation of the legume seed box option discusses this also..." places the seed shallow, using very long clear supply tubes..  in front of the packer wheels". The clear plastic tubes were cut off for some reason and bent to fit into the fertilizer supply tubes. The grain box also doesn't have the native grass attachment that would add agitators and place the seed shallow ... in front of the press/packer wheels... again according to the product spec sheet. I guess you could say I was lucky that the seed tubes plugged ... saved me 200+ pounds of perennial rye grass seed... that would have been buried at grain seed depth...  some days you just get lucky.. I guess.  It doesn't seem that the Haybuster 107C will operate with the legume box and native grass attachment at the same time.

Its called a legume box for a reason. Think that only small seeded legumes can be run through successfully. My experience with these units has been that not even legumes are metered correctly. Usually put my clover in big box with grass seed, stir a bit and it works really well.

I own a haybuster drill and put grass seed in the big box. works well. I always figure the chart refers to both boxes depending on if legume then chart for legume box and larger seed then chart for big seed box.

NickT(KY)..thanks, I've been looking for someone who owns a Haybuster. Some questions..
Is your rear "grain" box set up for grasses(fluffy grass option) with an agitator and discharge tubes that drop the seed just before the press wheel?  Is your legume box set up to discharge into the fertilizer tubes or do you have long clear discharge tubes that discharge the legume seed just before the press wheel? How deep do you run your colters when seeding grass/legumes? Thanks again
