I have a 1948 WD, that will not run properly. Last year after putting the tractor on a trailer and taking it to a show, the tractor would not run. We checked everything that we could think of and finally we put a new carb on it. The tractor will now start and run nice at an idle, but when we throttle the tractor up it will not run unless the choke is on. Adjusting the carb changes nothing... the tractor has been timed, and the mag has new points. The tractor has fresh gas that is run through a filter. No obvious leaks to the manifold gaskets. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we have field work that we would like to get started with...

take the drain plug out of the bowl of the carb and run it into a pail... run a gallon out and see if it runs as fast at the beginning as it does before you put the plug in... and I mean a QUANTITY of gas... it should flow pretty good if it slows down to a trickle, you have dirt in the tank, or something in the neck of the sediment bowel assembly ot in the line... check to see if you might have an old felt sediment bowel filter... we had one that starve the tractor... check for kinks in the line, check the inlet of the carb too and the needle valve assembly. It sounds like fuel issue to me. Your filter could be plugging up too... I have a fairly large inline on a 190 gas and when it starts to plug, it will spit and sputter and then I take it off and blow it backwards and put it back on and go... lets us know what you find.

We have taken the sediment bowl off and just have the inline filter, we are running 5/16 new rubber lines, no kinks or bends. Will pull the plug on the bowl tomorrow and see what happens, thanks!

Hey CMmunch, having to run with the choke on,is usually an indication of a blockage in the fuel getting to the carb. HTH's

You said you put a new carb on. Is there a possibility that the choke set-up is backwards on the new carb and what you think is choke on is actually choke off.

The other thing that can cause it to run too lean and better with the choke closed is a air leak. With it running try misting around the carb gasket and the manifold with starter fluid. If there is a leak it should suck in the starter fluid and you will hear it. Found a bad intake gasket on an onan that way before.

Many of those inline filters are designed for systems with a fuel pump, not a gravity flow system.

I would try all of the above, if no solution then try removing the inline filter and see if it runs.

Have sprayed around all possible areas of air leakage and no difference was found :(

The inline filter that is on the carb is one that came with the new/rebuilt carb from the carb shop...

I would call the carb shop and tell them it doesn't seem to work.

As mentioned above, Inline filters are not good for gravity fed fuel systems. I would lose it and put the fuel bowl back on. It was designed to operate that way. If the gas tank has not been cleaned out, I highly recommend it. I had to left mine lined due the the rust particles moving around and plugging the outlet.

Yup I have one I had to line and one I have been Blessed to limp by with. One good thing about the fuel bowl and screen above the bowl is you can see the gunk in the bowl and know how bad things are. Plus you want that fuel shut off for when the neddle float starts to leak and you don't have the time to fix it. I have seen a tractor which burned because of fuel leaking when it was sitting shut off. Wasn't a pretty site but now I shut off the fuel when it is off.

There are a few inline filters made for gravity systems, but they are rarely stocked and I doubt have the flow rate needed for a 45 hp engine being made for single cylinder engines. Most inline filters filter very fine but have a couple PSI pressure drop and the gravity system doesn't have more than about 1/2 psi when water takes a 30 foot column to match one atmosphere 15 psi.
Likely crud has plugged the inlet screen in the new carburetor, or the outlet screen above the sediment bowl and screen. The first test should be that pulling the drain plug on the carburetor. The gasoline flow should be nearly the diameter of a pencil and flow continuously after dumping the contents of the bowl, about a cup of gasoline.

THIS!!!!! I took the carb off my WD45 to clean/rebuild it and I managed to put the choke arm on 180 degrees off when I installed it....drove me nuts till I figured out it was backwards. Mike

The choke is an easy check just take the pipe to the air cleaner off and look to see how the choke works.

I have an inline filter on my WD, have not had a problem with that in 14 years, must be the right filter.

has't to be blocked up at the tank outlet or the fuel line is going up hill to much' don't help very much at all.

I had an acorn in my gas tank once. It would start and idle just fine but had no power with any throttle. The drain plug check will tell you if it's a blockage. It would run a constant flow just not enough. I have 2 wd45's that take on rain in the gas tanks if left outside. I've never been able to find out how.

My d17 had the same issue turned out all the leading or I think it os probably old lead anyway it is really soft that holds the fill neck to the tank had cracked over the years. I found it cause my fill neck was so abused you couldn't get a cap off when I removed it to fix a new setup the whole into the tank was all rust about 3/4 of the way around so only a very small area was still holding that fill neck into my tank. That was where my water came from after replacing that I haven't had any trouble. I cut the top off a different tank and made a gasket to hold it down then bolted it to the top of my tank came out nice and I now have a gas cap that fits right.

Sounds like dirt in the carb. Drain the carb and unscrew the main jet. Let some gas drain out. screw back in the jet and plug and you will be set until it gets dirty again. As suggested above you may need to clean out tank. I have used a cheap inline filter with good success.

"I had an acorn in my gas tank once." Best laugh I had all day. How on god's green earth did an acorn find it's way in there?!
Seriously, Yes, my WD also had this problem once. I completely removed the entire filter assembly at the tank and disposed of it. Let the 2 gallon of fuel in the tank completely drain through the hole. Then purchased a brand new fuel filter assembly, threaded in with fuel pipe dope and not a problem since in 6 years.
Hope this helps.

Pull your fuel line off and blow back into the tank. If it runs OK after that you may have something blocking the outlet. Had the seal from an additive cap in my WD tank. Fit perfectly into the outlet hole. Drove me nuts.
