Is it possible to change a steel wheel plow over to the spoked rubber wheels? IDE like to have a plow on rubber to go behind the WC I bought. I found a steel wheel plow but didn't know if the hubs would swap. Thought I would see if anyone has done it before I look at it.

I'm working on that project too. I think the hubs are different on a #1 vs. A #2 plow though. I believe I have a #2 on steel, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one on rubber, or another on steel that I can make cutoffs out of.

i would have steel cut offs i would trade for steel mine has real nice rubber on

it's been done numerous times, lots of times the gaps between the hub and wheels are taken up by different sizing of bearings and races. also the same brands may have interchangeable wheels.

I had a plow that was my dad's that he had had covered to rubber tires. The spokes had been cut and welded inside brake drums.

I never thought about making cut offs, but IDE hate to ruin a good set of steel wheels too.

Many a steel wheel has been chopped off and welded into steel rim to put rubber on a steel wheeled tractor or implement. Question on a vintage plow is what kind of bearings are in the steel wheel. Is it a plain straight spindle with a greased sleeve bearing? I doubt any modern wheel hub is available made that way. I doubt the steel wheel used the more modern tapered roller bearings. There might have been an AC hub to update the plow, but its not in my plow frames parts book. Nearly all bolt on wheel hubs use a pair of tapered roller bearings and depend on a shoulder on the spindle and a lock nut to push the tapered roller bearings together. Cones and cups come in at least 100 different cup inside tapers and matching rollers and cones, but the outside diameters of cups and inside diameters of matching cones can be had in many different sizes. Those spindles also need a seal surface beyond the shoulder because the bearings don't hold grease on their own.
Section R of the Baum Hydraulics catalog that you can download from http://www.baumhydraulics.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.baumhydraulics.com has a super listing of tapered roller bearings and seals. Section F shows modern hubs and spindles. Section Q shows needle roller bearings which are another possibility for the steel wheel hubs but won't be offered for bolt on wheel hubs.
Another change would be to buy stub spindles and hubs from Baum, Shoup ( http://www.shoupparts.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.shoupparts.com ), Northern Tool (in trailer axle parts at http://www.NorthernTool.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.NorthernTool.com ) or Red Neck Trailer Supply ( http://www.redneck-trailer.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.redneck-trailer.com/ ), cut off the old spindle and weld on the new one that takes a wheel hub so a standard implement or tractor front wheel and tire can be installed.
I bought a hub from Shoup or Baum that fit the spindle on the rear wheel of my 2000 AC Monobeam plow one time after I broke the original cast hub. It was an industry stock size.
