I was checking the price of scrap steel and found there are at least 5 varieties quoted. HMS 1 and 2 , cast steel, tool steel (2 different grades). My question is which one do I use for estimating the scrap price of a dozer. No, I don't plan on scrapping one but, we all know their selling value is tied to the price of scrap metal. At least, for the vintage ones I"m looking at.

The guy selling only hears the highest one, even if that has nothing to with it.Sellers also like to forget the price of cutting up and hauling. Hope you find a good one.

Thanks. Found some decent ones but, hauling cost puts them above my limited budget.

What price you will be looking at is mixed ferrous metal unless you plan on cutting up a old machine and separating the specialized steels IE cast, forged(also considered tool), roll formed as in frames or lifting arms, dirty as is considered for oily metals in the cylinders and clean as in plate cut to 2'x3' or less than 100#.
Here mixed metal steel scrap is just at $38/ton, have heard others getting up to $50 but scarce.

#1 iron and #1 cast are from the rail roads only! #2 iron and # 3 cast is from everyone else, except #2 cast is what they call "farmers cast" and that will pay better than #3 cast. there are different grades of other metals too. and if you haul in any rail road iron without any paperwork to go with it (legal ownership), expect to be arrested before you leave the scrap yard property! the scrap yard will call law enforcement while you are unloading! cast from your machine should be classified as #2 by the yard!

another thing. weight your transport vehicle/trailer empty, then when loaded re-weigh it and take your printed scale ticket with you. you'd be surprised at the difference on the printed tickets! the yard will find extra money to pay what's rightfully yours!
