I have a farmall H which belonged to my grandfather and the motor is junk. I could rebuild the motor but just using my d15 with a 160 gas motor compared to my pasquali 988 with a Lambardini diesel it is frustrating how much fuel the d15 uses to to the same job. Given that the tractors are about the same hp ratings. My tractors are used all summer for farming and I would really like to reduce my fuel bill. I was wondering what would be a good efficient diesel to put into a farmall H. I am thinking it needs to be between 30 and 40 hp I don't think the h transmission would take much more power then 40 hp of constant usage.
I also would like to use air cooled but the deutz motors just seem really expensive and the lambardini is really hard to find. So I thought maybe a Detroit 2 71 I think the rpm range would be about right. I do want the replacement motor to have about the same operating rpm as the stock farmall h gas.
Just figured I would ask if all goes well with a few other ventures I am involved with this could be a winter project for next winter.
I know re powering my h is not going to be cheap and that restoring it is a way to loose money but it is a tractor I want for the fact that it was my grandfather's and if swapping the motor bugs me later I will have the oem motor but I really do care more about what they do for me then what my tractors where oem.

IHC did thus for you when tbey came out with the 350 diesel. If you can find the right parts tractor the swap would be very easy. Tbey used a Continental engine

Thanks didn't really think about what IHC diesel might bolt right up. Parts tractor Humm think I could end up in the same boat as Jay on that one and anything I bought would be soo much better then my h that I wouldn't want to take it apart....
