Hi guys-Enjoy the picture. Questions for you guys...

When I do compaction work, how do I know I have compacted enough. What is the test?

When you guys do compaction, do you add water?

yes water helps but its easier to work with the dirt when it has moisture in it.  also you want to limit how thick your dirt is when compacting or it wont compact as well.  we try to keep the material 6-8 inches at a time when we build pond dams,   to much at a time and you can get it compacted well.

i dont know what you are building but you could drive a fence post into it and get a feel compared to normal ground

We add some water and mix well with motorgrader or something with an angle blade in 6" layers. Dry dirt won't bond together [as others have said] Be careful adding water! Its usually easier to add a little more than to try to dry it out.
We "proof-test" with a well loaded dump truck driven across the fill. The depth of the ruts will tell you roughly how much compaction you have already.
Final tests are with nuclear densitometer , depending on type of project and what the customer wants .
