Just got a WD45 and the governor isn't working very well. She will idel down, but it will die if it gets too low and then when you throttle it up it revs up quickly and the governor doesn't kick in. The linkage is all in tact and it will move back and forth by hand freely.
Where is the best place to start? What are the common pieces that need to be repaired on the governors?

Two things, Set the idle stop on carb to control the idle RPM and then pull the governor out and look at the weights and pins for where, or take off the little cover on the front cover and look at them.

Just got done digging into the governor. I pulled it out from the back (coil) side. The thrust bearing is siezed causing my problems. The weights and spring all seem to be in good order.
One new question. Should I replace the spring while I have it apart?
It is a 1953 WD45 and the Spring has a Yellow Stripe on it.

Now a few weeks later I have it fixed.
I took the governor / timing housing off along with teh distributor and coil. The culprit was a bad thrust bearing. The spring was good (had yellow strip on it) and the pieces that run on the bearing were a bit worn, but not too badly. Sandy lake fixed me up with a good salvaged one and now that it is back together and running like is should.
