I'm adding headlights to my 1939. Have several headlights, the mounting studs appear to be 1/2", the nuts in the radiator housing are 1/4" or 5/16".

Was there a bracket used to mount the headlights on the early B's? Anyone have pictures?

39 Bs were in a period of transition like the 38s.  If your 39 had no provision for mounting a generator bracket to the block it probably was a hand crank only B without any lights when new.  Radiator surround if it's vintage and original was not threaded for mounting headlamps. It is pretty hard to tell just by the serial number on the transmission what year all the parts an any givin  B tractor are.  Many Bs with 39 serial numbers could have been updated  with parts from later Bs with electrics.
To answer your ? about special light mounting brackets.   Only on some IBs but not Bs are headlight mounting brackets shown in parts books.

Thanks Ken, I think you are right, the generator bracket looks homemade. Time to getting the drill and taps out...
