H3/HD3 Serial Number Range ?

Has anyone come across a difference in the reported serial numbers for the AC H3/HD3 Crawlers.

Looked at a very early machine yesterday - Serial Number stamping showed very clearly the following:

H-3 0008 - Norms book shows the production starting at 1001? Are there more H3's out there than what was recorded? Would like to hear insights from forum members.

Terry Dean data book also lists 1001 as starting number

Hey Cal: I noticed Terry's book has the H-3's starting at 1001. Am very stumped on this....maybe time for me to get new specks!

Could it be that it was stamped erroneously at the factory?

There does seem to be some inconsistencies, I own an H-3 with a serial number of 9766 and the books say the last gas one Allis made was 9699. So I also don't know what to think. It's not a diesel with a gas motor in as it is stamped H-3 not HD-3. I am sure this doesn't help you.

Hello Kweeber: Your information is extremely helpful. As a result of your information combined with what was observed on the H-3 0008 one can conclude that there are perhaps more H-3's than what has been recorded.

It would also be reasonable to conclude that since the factory might have remaining stock during the later stages of the H3 series and the beginning of the H4 series that they could have continued to assemble machines and the recording of what was assembled never made it into the final records. Add to the fact that Norm was involved heavily on the Ag. side and not the Industrial side. Norm in his Industrial books extends credits to "others" within the Allis Chalmers Company for providing records and insights on various models of Allis Industrial and Construction Machinery. This is noted in the very beginning of the Allis Industrial Construction Machinery book - hence the basis that information on serial numbers and records regarding same came from "other" sources and may not reflect the total number produced.

Nonetheless, Norm's books where an wonderful tribute to the Allis company its machinery. His books contain a wealth of information that may not have been otherwise written without his interest and foresight!

If anyone else has insights on this ~ would certainly encourage your thoughts!!!
