Checking with the Dozer and Crawler Sages on the best brake bonding material for the crawlers referenced.

McMaster Carr sells Low, Medium, High Friction and Metal Free lining material.

Am thinking that a brake material that doesn't wear out the drum face would be the best?

Has anyone on here done there own brake lining for the good old AC Crawlers and if so can you recommend a material that would be similar to the factory brake material.

Cal: Thanks for the recommendations - here is what I have so far:

Early brake bands utilized 7 individual pads to span the radius of the brake band.

Each individual pad is composed of friction bonding material with a cross section of 2"w x 3 3/4" length. The thickness of the friction material shows it to be 1/8" but not sure that is correct due to potential wear. Maybe original brake material was 1/4"?

The termination of the friction material to the band was accomplished by 3/16" semi tubular bronze rivets and were set in a counterbore to accept the rivet head.

Early H3's like the one I am working on- (circa 1962) show no evidence of any bonding adhesive.

There is good discussion on the evolution of the brake and clutch rivets on the Valley Fastner Group LLC website.

Valley Fastners data suggest that bronze semi tubular was dropped due to cost of manufacturer in favor of cheaper zinc plated rivets.

Later during the life of the H4/HD4 and 650 series a segmental brake band was designed and equipped for braking purposes. Am assuming the redesign was to make easier the brake lining replacement process.

At this point and with the data on hand would prefer to do the brake band work myself so as to learn and later share with those that are contemplating this same type of work.

Looking forward to any thoughts and discussion on advancement of brake bonding materials.

I sent my brakes to Tony 6 years ago for my HD16 after speaking with him on the phone. I did not know of Rick at the time but i now know he deals with this stuff also. My liners were NLA and Tony's brake guy did an excellent job on the custom reline. They work great and still look new. He also did a trans brake for my old IH1600 loadstar.

Orange man ! Gent that does all my brakes & clutches has been doing the since the 60`s , I have never had a problem of any kind.

He uses the best products for the application. He also does custom work of all kinds .

On my HD5 I had one set done by small old time brake shop here in city but place now closed .

Last set I did myself with lining I salvaged from a IH crawler band set - I had to redrill and countersink rivets - found a trucking company that had rivet press and did it myself .

One other set I used brass bolts on but with nut onto bolt they were a little problem when in cases .

Coke: As always appreciate your guidance and advice. Did you use an overhead drill press with a stop to counterbore the hole for the rivits?

Since the Allis brake friction material for Dozers/Crawlers appears very thin or not available unless you buy a whole band premade, will plan to walk over to the Caterpillar store to see if the D2 or D4 had similar size brake bands/drums. Once I procure Caterpillar material that would be similar to what is needed for the H3 brake band with a little machining with a dremel tool it will likely provide the lasting results that are needed. This approach will also afford a part number that can be used for future reference.

I am surprised that there are not more folks on this site that have done their own brake bands rather than "send away".
