How much is too much? I know they say the A-C's are known for their whine, but I'm just wondering if there's a way to tell. What causes the whine? My 8N is real quite and when I switch to the B it's a pretty noticeable difference.
Thanks

not uncommon for a b to whine -- uncommon for a 8n not to whine

Straight cut gears tend to whine when worked. Helical cut gears tend to not whine. Helical gears are more expensive and don't work for sliding gear transmissions. Straight cut gears, especially when worn have a bit of a gap when shifting the load to the next tooth and that makes the whine. Helical cut gears can be made to not have that gap, but in a transmission need shifting clutches.

You don't need shifting clutches for a helical gear transmission. Dad's been farming with Allis helical gears since the late 60's and I have grown up with these transmissions and the only gear jumper we ever had was a D17 that my brother bought and it was that way when he bought it. One trip to the dealer 20 years ago and it's been fine ever since. You get enough wear they will eventually pop out, yes but you could say the same about syncro clutches. Eventually you'll have to rebuild them. I've never seen a 7010 thru 8070 ever jump out of gear and they have no shifting clutches. OK rant over.

Gears to tight whine ,gears to loose roar. My 49 B seems to roar but after 66 years I yes it has loosened up a bit.

This'n kinda makes a noise similar to your stomach growling when going down the road. Sometimes it's loud, sometimes it's not too bad. I thought maybe it was in the chains in the drop boxes.

I think they all whine. Here's a couple videos of mine and the noise the tranny makes.

Really? The guy I bought it from (I was 11) said they had chains. Phffft! What an idiot! He said don't hook too big a load on it because it could either twist off the drive shaft in the torque tube or break the chains in the drop boxes. I have yet to do either lol, but I guess the 2nd is impossible!

With a B it's hard to hook too big a load on it and still get it to move, even though they are powerful little tractors!  Hard to break it unless you jerk it hard.

Case used chains in the final drives until the 1070 series came about. As far as I know Allis never used chains. I know a B or any Allis tractor built from the WC on up never did. Barring possible specialty builds.

Just watched your video, my B makes the same sound when you let the clutch out, any idea what causes it?

Thanks.

Gilly.

The first video of you driving it sounds like all my Bs and Cs.  The second video where you are feathering the clutch sounds like the pre-load on the forward main transmission shaft has loosened.  That is just a guess though.  If you start it in neutral and let it idle a bit (20 seconds), then push the clutch in, does it grind when you try to put it in gear?  I suppose it could also be the clutch release bearing too.

Nope, never figured out why it was making that noise.

No, the gears don't grind if I let it sit for awhile. That video was taken after the tractor had been running for awhile. Actually I don't think the gears have ever grinded except for user error.

Mine is exactly the same, i changed all of the main shaft bearings as there was water in the housing, the bearing on the end of the main shaft (into the pto housing) had collapsed so assumed that would cure it. But it didnt, not caused any problems so far though.

If you haven't changed the gear oil in the drop boxes you should consider removing the pans and doing a change, most farmers never did and it can be nasty. Tom

I did that last year. Had very little oil in there, with a lot of gunk in the bottom.
