In the manual it says "Valve spring free length 2 5/16".

So what does that exactly mean? They must be 2 5/16" to be acceptable for reuse? Mine all measure short, do springs actually "wear", or is it just from being compressed for 40 years?

Does anyone here sell guides and springs separately, I'd just as soon not buy a complete valve train kit, as the valve stems measure O.K., so my current master plan is to replace guides and springs and grind the valves.

Any advice appreciated.

The springs change from being compressed & working for 50 some years. You can get shims to go under the springs to get them back to around book height. Yes you can buy all the parts separately. I have gotten some from Norm in IL. But they may cost a little more individualy. The more consistent they all are the better. I use a spring tension gage for my rebuilds. So all the spring pressures are close to the same.
