We have a '59 D14, mice made a home up in the starter gears/flywheel. Went unnoticed until BIL tried to start it. Took starter off, dug copious amounts of squirrel bedding out. Put the starter back, it is dead, no clicking.. nothing. Took back off, set on bench and took a good battery to jump and still won't do anything. Ideas what we fried? Solenoid or starter itself? For what it's worth the darn starter is only 3-4 years old (dad's guess) :( No good place for the varmits to make entry, would like to plug that hole so doesn't happen again! Thanks for any hints / tips |

Good news is you're not the first to have that happened to. The mouse house in D-14 #1 was so bad it took me 4 hours to get most of it out,filling TWO garbage cans!! I'd pull the starter out, put on bench and put 12V to it. be sure it's clamped down though, they tend to move real fast ! This will confirm/deny the starter is good. All the cast iron where the starter fit should be clean ! I use a wire brush for that, also clean the pointed bolt that holds the starter in there as well. With the starter off , put a meter or lightbulb as the 'starter', turn switch on and try the key to 'start', light should come on. No light means no 12V to it, could be bad ignition switch(common...it's 50 years old...) ,or a bad starter relay. check for 12V getting to the relay. Good news is there's only 3-4 things it can be and NO computer !! Re.. the hole. there's supposed to be a big cover for that 'drain hole' in the torque tube. A 'spring steel' clip is riveted to a disc of steel, reminds me I should find the one I stuck 'somewhere' in the garage 7 or 8 years ago.... It has been a few years since I had a starter from that era apart, but the are not very complicated motors. I would take it apart and look at the connections inside, particularly the brushes. Clean everything up, put it back together and it just may work. Robert |
