Now that I have my steering clucth figured out ...and taken out ...I am open for advice on whether I should replace the clucthes on the other side also....It is fairly easy to get at now but... the other side works fine.   If its not broke...Dont fix it... OR might as well have both sides new ???

Does the clutch pack have 5/16 or 3/8 bolts? If they are 5/16 change them as this was  a service bulletin on the clutch packs. Mine cam loose-5/16.

They are 5/16...and now that you mentioned that..they were a LITTLE loose but I figured that was just because the discs and plates were a little worn out..should I replace the bolts too..or ..can I drill out the holes and put in 3/8 ???

I would drill out the holes and put in 3/8" bolts. It's not that they loosen, they break. Use grade 8. I also would do each clutches as needed. I had one side bad and one side good. The good side has been in it for atleast 20 years and sat alot. Did you use the fibre or bi-metal driven discs? Fibre ones disintergrate and bimetal ones rust, but still better I think. Because you have it that far apart, you might want to take the other clutch pack out and apart. That pilot bearing is probably junk too.

I did order the bimetal discs and I did go down to the shop this morning to look at the clucth pac... I didnt try one ..but ..it  almost looks like 3/8 will go in the holes anyway..I will put it back together with 3/8...Im still wondering if I should put everything new in the other side too or save my time and money and wait and see if any thing goes wrong with it... mabey it will last another 20 years??Im sure someone has been in my shoes before and wished they would have done them both at the same time OR only did the bad side and the other is still work'n fine ...still open for suggestions...

When I did my HD5 I had a bad pressure plate on rt side and ended up putting the HD11 ceramic discs in both sides as I had it down anyway . No problems with clutches since.

I know its 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other ...but do you think the other side needed the new ones or ..Like you said  .. your all ready in to it .. better safe than sorry??

When I reworked the clutch packs ,  I had snapped bolts (5/16). When you think about it all of the tractor's power is being directed through the steering clutches. They should be kept  A#1.

THANKS for all the input guys...the dozer is in very good condition and I am still a little puzzle'd why the one side stripped out( I think it was froze up and they pulled it about a mile trying to free it or something??) But I think I will over fix it , when I put it back together.. Thanks again..

As I said before, I had both sides out and only replaced one side, but did replace both center bearings. The side that I didn't replace were bimetal and not rusted. It really isn't a big deal getting to them. If the other side were fibre discs, I would have changed them.
