So my 7080 developed a knock and turns out a rod bearing went out and it spun it. ~4500 hours and a black belly. Just got back an estimate from the shop and looking at just under $8,000 for the overhaul and wondering if it is worth it... bought the tractor less than 100 hours ago for $15,000 and it was a great tractor (while it worked). Opinions on going through with overhaul or looking into a cummins retrofit or ?

New crank for sure and a new viscous crank pulley dampener. Get a different conn rod and check the balance of it to the other five. All new conn rod bolts. Magnaflux conn rods. New pin bushings. Magnaflux the oil pump mounting bracket ears. Set the high idle down to 2600-2650 RPM max.

That's a tough call. I think I would go for a used engine. Look on ebay there are a few I think, I saw a NOS long block a couple weeks ago.

I definitely would not go for a "good" used engine. You are taking a complete stranger's word that it is good. That engine might last 100 hours, just like the original one did. Get it rebuilt, then you know what you have.
Where else are you going to get a 180 hp tractor for $23,000?

Where else are you going to get a 180 hp tractor for $23,000? Just about anywhere! And where does it end? Whos to say the rear end doesnt go out after the engine rebuild. Then what. Have 30k in it?

Get her rebuilt and lower the rpms some. Had about the same thing happen on a 8070, put just over a 100 or so hours and blew a piston. 7080's sound so mean they make a Deere wet themselves

I have a Cummins powered 7580 the Cummins is the cherry on the top. I don't know who did the repower but they did a good job. It looks factory. You can find a 505 for $2500 not sure about an adaptor plate.

Do not mess with the overhaul...drop a Cummins in it and make a real tractor out of it....we did it with an 8070 and it made it one hell of a tractor. I wouldn't own a 7080, 7580 or an 8070 without a Cummins motor in it. I'm die hard Allis but the 426 was not beefy enough for those tractor's

If your gonna keep it and use it for a long time I'm in the Cummins conversion camp. We have a Cummins powered 7080 and it is a horse. Very good combination.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Appreciate it. I'll look in to
the cummins conversion, that would be with a 8.3L correct? And if I went through with the conversion how difficult is it- do you basically just need to drop it in and plumb it or is it super complicated?

It'll cost money to convert. I'd just do what Dr Allis said. Someone said you can get all kinds of 180 hp for $23,000 but you'll have to eat at least $10,000 on your 7080 to get rid of it. With a knock to me it isn't worth one penny more than $5,000. In fact $3,000 would be all I'd pay if you want to sell it to me and deliver it. Economically the overhaul is your best option IMO.

Picture is worth a thousand words...Look, there is a reason you paid 15k, its a pretty nice tractor for what, 35 years old? If it were me, I'm 49, Id rebuild it and tune the high idle down as recommended. Should last a long time, jmho, Trev.

I've got a good engine on my 7080, but the pump went out, and I parked it. (there's other reasons why I parked it, not just the pump) been sittin now for 2 years (exhaust covered). if you come here, and take it out, and puts it in yers. I want $2500. for the engine, if it don't run, you don't own it...bring it back for a refund!

That would be the route I would take. Buy shameless motor and use the tractor till youve got your moneys worth. I have a tight farm budget I wouldnt be able to spread your cost of rebuild over my acres comfortably. Your operation may be different so do what you can afford I guess.

Sorry Dale, I wasn't suggesting you actually sell it out from under him, I was just curious, given the chance he might not take it. If you have a deal with him, by all means I don't want to get in the way, that's not how I operate.

Too late now but you should have replaced brgs when you bought it with that many hrs especially in a high rpm 7080.
