I thought I'd ask here before finding a JD forum. I do not own a green machine, but a fellow in my club does. He has a 1948 B. It messed the garage this past weekend. Looks like the float stuck and it flooded out. However, he said it looked like oil leaked from the rear-end, an issue my D15 developed recently. I know gas probably got into his crank-case, but would it be able to get into the transmission AND rear-end also? I hope one of you have some green experience. | Yes, but it would take a lot of gas. If the right-hand crankshaft seal leaks, the gas would go into the first reduction gear cover(behind the belt pulley). The cover will hold a small amount of oil and then drain into the transmission and rear end. You should be able to tell by the smell of the transmission oil if it has gas in it. |

been lots of barns caught on fire from them green machines from floats ticking in the carbs---also seen a international pickup truck do the same thing--blowed the oil pan off
one sun. aft.

Another JD leak point is the oil pressure operated fuel valve some models had. When the diaphragm dies of old age gas runs into the engine oil. Gerald J. |

It is in the rear-end, I smelled it. We will be draining it all and refilling it. New filters, too. Anything else to watch for? | Check and make sure you don't have excessive crankshaft end play or main bearing clearance. If the belt pulley moves side to side when you engage and disengage the clutch, the flywheel may have loosened up. Let it go too long and it could ruin the flywheel and/or the tapered splines on the crank. Tell him to shut the fuel off and let the engine die on its own so that the carb runs dry. He won't have to do this again. |

A piece of crud got stuck in the float needle. That is what caused the issue. Also, his fuel shut-off isn't like my D15. I have to screw mine in. His just turns 90deg and that's it. Apparently it has a slow leak! Also, my D15 leaked for a good reason. The power-director dip-stick/hex bolt has a hole in each side of the hex head. Both holes were clogged. Guess it built pressure and... whoops! Bet I keep my eye on those breather-holes now. Oh, and we should be in tomorrow's local newspaper. The sheriff lead us, the deceased man's son drove his JD model BO behind the sheriff, then we were all lined up behind him, then the hearse, then the cars. Everybody was running out of stores along the road and getting pictures and video. We had a LOT of green (B's, M's, 60's, etc) and they made an AWESOME sound! We had one Case at the rear of the pack, a Kubota, a Ford, and my AC.
