| Here is a mundane question. Can someone please tell me why some D15 Series II tractors had the cream hood decals with chrome while some did not? I have seen the chrome decals on old pictures used in conjunction with both the gear logo and the triangle logo. Was the chrome used on the earlier serial numbers and the plain on the later and if so does anyone have any idea about when the change occurred? Thanks for your help. |

Chrome outline was used on the early model Series II tractors. Do not know exactly when they dropped the chrome. A friend has a nice original D-15 ll serial 20890 with the chrome decals so they were used at least until late 1965. My 1967 D-15 ll has the non chrome decals. ------------- Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed |

Hey DFH,,,,,Well,I hope you can get YOUR question resolved, cause it would sure go a long ways toward settling this very sticky issue. I recently did a lot of research and asking questions, looking at hundreds and hundreds of pictures, talking to collectors and owners and almost to the point of making a pest of myself as some suggested. AND,,,the issue is STILL not and prolly never will be resolved, until someone takes the initiative and time to do a bonifide spreadsheet based on pics and serial numbers on WHEN AC made the changes and if the different models had a bearing on those changes. AC pretty much bases their changes on their serial number changes, so it wouldn't be a really big project, just time consuming. There are lots of very knowledgeable owners here and on other forums that have THAT knowledge and would be a great step forward for this project that,,,,,you have chosen to undertake,,,,  GOOD LUCK,,,,

My guess is that the chrome in the decals was dropped when the One-Ninety came out in late 1964 and A-C wanted to keep the decals on the tractor line all looking somewhat the same. I have a original set of Series IV D-17 decals without the chrome and the date printed on the back of them is 12-64. I would say very few of the production of the 1965 D-17's and D-15's had chrome decals. I know some did as they probably just keep using what chrome decals they had left in the factory until they were gone. As far as making a tractor chart today is gonna be just about impossible in my opinion. Unless you bought the tractor new you really have no idea on the history of the tractor after 50 years. These tractors have changed hands so many times, people swap sheet metal, some have been repainted once or twice already and even a old repaint job can look original after 35 years in the weather. About the only other thing I can think would be to get some old parts books that have the date printed on them and see when the decal part number changed. ------------- Matt Folkers FOLKERS RESTORATION Restoring vintage things to last so the future can enjoy our past. |

Here are some observations on four nice original D-15 ll. All close by. Last two are in my shed
Serial 15000 (1963) Chrome decals - 5 bolt front wheels diamond logo SC Serial 20890 (late 1965) Chrome decals - 5 bolt front wheels diamond logo SC
Serial 22245 (mid 1966) plain decals - 5 bolt front wheels triangle logo 3pt
Serial 23890 (early 1967) plain decals - 6 bolt front wheels triangle logo 3pt
