Ok, so first off, im new to the tractor world, this is my first tractor, and it needs a bit of work.

With that being said, i recent aquired an Allis Chalmers 6140 4wd from my uncle.  The tractor runs great, everything works, with the exception of the steering.  The steering box is bad, and my uncle has it rigged up with a hydraulic switch hooked to the old steering box with some linkage and that runs a hydraulic ram connected to the front end to steer the tractor.  The way its set up, the steering speed is very fast, and very inconsistent, the lower the rpms, the less it works, the higher the rpms, the better it works.   The steering boxes for these tractor cant be bought new anymore and the used ones are quite expensive.

So, what i want to do is hook-up and full hydraulic orbitrol valve from the steering hydraulic pump to the ram that is used to steer the tractor.  I purchased a maintenance manual, and i cant seem to find the output of the hydraulic pump for the steering on this tractor. So, my question to you guys is what size valve should i buy ?? Many of them tell have specs that require a certain output from the hydraulic pump to operate, but I cant find anything on this particular tractor.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, please disregard any terminal errors i may have had regarding parts and names, like i said, im very new to this.

You are in for some work...  I rigged up PS on a chinese tractor, years ago, here's what I did:  Got a saginaw pump offn an old chrysler, rigged it to an empty slot on the crank pully, then got a PS assist cylinder and valve off'n an old 70's ford torino, I think, put the valve on the gearbox to front end tie rod.  Then put the PA cylinder in on the side to side tie rod on the front end.  I anchored the one end of the cyl to one front axle bracket, and welded in a tie rod socket , on the front end side to side tie rod.   Then had all new hoses made. About 40+ hrs of work, IIRR...

Everything is already hooked there and mounted as far as the hydraulic cylinder connected to the steering and all.  The only thing i wondering about is what size orbitrol i need.  The hydraulic system is an open system by the way.  If that helps anys.

Ok, i dont think you are understanding.  I have a hydraulic steering system on the tractor already.  From the factory is was a hydraulic assisted steering gear box with a linkage connected from the steering box to the front axle to steer the tractor.  That box went bad, so a Hydraulic Cylinder was installed on the front and a hydraulic switch thats actuated by linkage from the steering box works the cylinder. The steering box still operates the actuator, but the hydraulic part of it is broken, so its like non power steering if it was hooked to the steering.  So i want to remove the hydraulic switch and the old steering box and hook up a full hydraulic orbitrol to the ram instead of the rig up thats on there now.  Hope that clears it up.  Maybe you understand and i don't lol, thats quite a possibility.  The only problem is i dont know the output of the hydraulic pump that goes to the steering box, so i dont know what size orbitrol to get.  When i look up the specs for hydraulics it just says "open system."

Yes gleaner uses a full hyd steering with steering motor hooked to steering wheel a priority valve that makes it steer first a small hyd cylinder on rear axle 2 ways to do it use 6140 hyd to run gleaner steering motor would have to have a priority valve tractor may have one already for steering box on ther but most likely presure and flow will not match combne components I would use combine pump belt drive it it's small gear pump off tractor engine even use combine resivior also small mount on frame fender ect then ust combine steering wheel with steering motor and finally fab hyd cyl to frame and drag link on tractor you will need to know how to weld and fabricate as far as know no quick bolt solutions exist some thing may work but I know gleaner components are trouble free and always work

what he needs to know if the gpm of the steering circuit on that tractor.  those orbitals can be bought new and have different flow rates.  he already has a hydraulic cylindar on the front axel, he just needs to match the new orbital motor to match that tractor.  Unfortunately i can't help you with that information.

If you can't find a spec manual, you may be able to hook up the pump to a flow meter, to see what its putting out, then figger it out thataway...

Just trying to get him to use matched components that are cheap already match up most hyd assisted boxes are low psi low volume most steering motors are high presure can be open center with priority valve pressure comps dated or load sensitive you sure can flow test tractor steering circuit would,be surprised if over several hinders pound not enough for full steering by hyd I would build stand olone system with matches components that work together my advice is use what you know works new components are on option but worthless if not comparable with tractor low and psi from its opn center priority calve Mabee 6140 has separate pump don't have service manual I could tell you then several ways to make it work you choice

It has a pump that runs the fluid to the components, like the PTO and the 3-point, and then it has a smaller pump that goes to the steering box.
