My 175D that I thought had charging problems is still not right. I charged the battery and everything seemed ok, then the other day when I started it smoke rolled out from under the cowl. I turned the key off, blew out the smoke/fire....thought maybe it was just a lot of chaff on the coil wire thingy on the keyswitch. Anyway, blew everything out with air, checked the electrical connections and everything looked alright. Last night I started it up and the smoke came rolling out again. Turned off the key, but it kept on smoking and burned the insulation off of a wire coming out of the wire harness to the keyswitch (I think, it burned off whatever it was attached to). Now I can't trace the wire because there is no color to it anymore. Wiring diagram in the manual is kinda hard to decipher.....I think I should just get a new wiring harness, does anyone make one??

Eldon you may have to unbundle the wire harness and physically trace the wire from point to point which may include removing the hood/side panels and removing the instrument panel. It's time consuming so you may want to wait until off season if you don't need it right now.

It will take some time to trace the burnt wire but I would want to open it up and get that wire out of there before it shorts to something else and starts smoking again. Once the burnt wire is removed you can probably run the tractor safely without a charging circuit as long as you charge the battery. But leaving a burnt wire would scare me I would hate to hear that your tractor suffered an electrical fire. That would be much worse then loosing time now to get that broken wire out.
As to the replacement harness issue. They are expensive first you need to figure out what device shorted out causing the wire to burn. Probably the one at the other end of the wire... replace thar and any wire which look bad or have cracked insulation. Point to Point wiring with the correct color wire is the cheapest and easiest way to replace the harness. It is what I did on my d17.

Hi Eldon, I had that happen with my 175 a few years back - smoke from under the cowl/no charging. Can't really tell you what caused it though.
Parked it, restored it and replaced/rebuilt everything pertaining to the electrical system. Works great now.
I would start with a new key switch and get your voltage regulator and alternator rebuilt to start with (in addition to fixing the burnt wiring).
I donated my old wiring harness to Steve @ B&B earlier this year. Hopefully in time he will be able to make some new wiring harnesses for these tractors. Good luck.

Most 175 wiring fires start where they go down from the dash and turn forward. MACK
