Got my WD45 running today and immediately heard a random loud knock coming from the clutch housing. Seems to disappear or be not as noticeable once the tractor is warmed up. Doesn't matter if the clutch is engaged or not. Any idea what could be the cause? If it was sitting for a long time, the throwout bearing may have had some pretty dry grease in spots, and that'd make the bearing bang around a whole lot. I'll second JW's suggestion- take off that square cover, and also the cover underneath... if something falls out and it's more magnetic than a mouse, you may have a problem. Is the knock there with the lift arms up, down or both, and is there a belt pulley on the right side of the tractor?

| This may not be your problem, but I had broken flywheel bolts once upon a time. It started just as a "knock" down deep in the motor; thought it might be a busted crank, but it wasn't. Still requires a split and repair. HTH. |

No difference with the arms up or down, tranny in gear or out, PTO on or off. Dave's explanation seems most plausible since the tractor has been sitting inside for 2 or 3 years without use. | I don't think it is a throwout bearing. It would not even be turning when your foot is off the clutch. How is the oil pressure? Rod knock from #4 cylinder? |

 JW, that came to me as a result of the 'missing hand-clutch pin' situation with my WD project... the tractor came to me with no PTO gearbox, and after investigation, I found that the hand-clutch was missing a rather critical, but small and very hard magnetic part.I never found the pin, but I suspect that it was attracted by gravity through the gauntlet of gnashing gears, leaving a path of dental-destruction and dousal of debris along it's dive to the depths. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Yknow, if there's a broken flywheel bolt... Brian- when yours broke, did the bolt head fraggies stay inside the cavity in the center of the clutch, and just bounce around, or did they manage to drop through? If it dropped through, did it find way to safety, or become lodged between the ring gear and flywheel housing and grind a path around the inside of the casting? ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. I would think that the common sense thing to do would be to pull off the large clutch inspection cover and see if there's small pieces of disc springs laying on the inside of that cover. That should help tell you if there's some kind of a problem with the clutch or, at least you'll be able to see what might be going on in there. There's no way that the throwout bearing would be making a noise of any kind sitting still, since the only time it's used is when the clutch is disengaged. After that, it might be that it'll need to be dug into deeper. Good luck. Rick |

Took a look in the clutch housing today. No chunks of metal laying around anywhere. Nothing looks out of place. Just had the starter rebuilt last week, so I can rule that out. Hmmm... could it be the trans drive shaft bouncing fore/aft, or worn splines under the clutch disk, or ... hydraulic pump followers... or pump unloader being indecisive? ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem.
