A quick question about gaskets.  I just got my new water pump for my F2, and it has a paper type gasket to mate the pump housing to the block.  I have worked with people of two different schools of thought.
School 1: put the gasket on, and bolt it down, the bolts will squeeze the gasket material to make the seal.
School 2: Always put gasket sealant  on the paper gaskets, then tighten.

Your thoughts.

Thanks in Advance

John

If both surfaces are flat and clean, the gasket should be fine by itself. Might be easier to put a layer of gasket sealer on the pump to hold it in place though. I have a can of permatex forma gasket (don't know what type but it's near black) that comes in real handy for such things, but only use it on one side.

I have always put some type of sealer on both sides of any paper gasket. You dont need alot. A thin coat will be enough.

Indian Head Shellac works great on paper gaskets.
