I was out with my 1950 WD today mowing hay. The mower is a Allis Chalmers Number 7 trailer mower. It does pretty good for the most part. This was the first cutting, I could not get to the hay sooner because of my schedule or rain.  It does pretty good on grass. See below.  The Alfalfa was down a little bit. So there was a few challenges. 1. It plugged once in a while. I found by adjusting the angle of the sickle this helped. See the photo below. I set it so the sickle is pointing up a little.  2. I need to come up with a better sweep on the end of the sickle. It works great in tall grass. But in Alfalfa it is hard to see where you have mowed and it seems to clump on the end of the sickle. I am looking for suggestions. The photo below is what I see when I am going through the alfalfa as you can see it is hard to see where you already cut!  I have a New Holland Super 68 that was my Grandpas. I used it when I was growing up. I hope to bale on Thursday before the rain on Friday! You know, a lot of hay was put up by a lot of farmers with the "old, antique" machinery. If kept in good condition, it does just as nice a job as a multi thousand dollar machine, and unless you are doing hundreds of acres, it's more fun too.

You're doin a fine job there Mike. Back when I had to run the Allis conditioner, it got to be a real pain if somebody's grass board wasn't doing the job. It's nice to have a good gap between cuts to keep the rollers from pluggin up. I stood and watched one like that sell at auction about 12 years ago. I didn't think I needed it cause I have a JD #5 with a home made bracket on my WD. Now I haven't even tried to hook that blamed thing up in 7 years and won't ever again probably. Thanks you guys. Charlie it is nice to hook up the trailer mower....but it is a wee bit of a challenge. The blooming thing is tail heavy. So when I hook up, I have to put my weight on the tongue of the mower toget it down to the tractor drawbar. Maybe there is an easier way that I have not figured out yet! It is not as easy as it looks. Jim Lux is going to bring me a deflector board and grass stick to try. The trick to hooking up that tail heavy equipment is a salvage yard jack mounted on the tail you crank up and down to the level you need. Pretty cheap also.  Al
