Subject: Front Axle pivot pin removal on a 190XT?

Hello, First of all I've visited this site for years but have rarely ever posted on here. I've enjoyed reading the posts on this site and have learned many things about Allis-Chalmers. My question is the removal of the front axle pivot pin on a 190XT. The pin I'm having trouble removing is the "front" pivot pin. The diagram shows to have a snap ring on the front side of the pivot pin. I have removed the snap ring on the back side of the pin already. Is there another snap ring on the front? I see there's a spot in the middle of the pin that is threaded. Is this used for removal of the pin? The reason I'm trying to get this pin out is to replace the axle main member (the one on my tractor has been cracked and welded). I found a good one in a salvage yard to replace it with. Thank you for any input you all may have.

The parts book only shows one snap ring and it is at the front of the tractor. What might be holding it in place is the 40+ years of wear. That pin is no longer perfectly round and will not slide through the bushings. Had this problem with my 175. Lots of hammering, oiling and heating.

Snap ring is at the back side of axle support. There are alot more out there that won't come out than will. MACK

My Ford took a sledge hammer to drive it out and a considerable amount of cussing. Couldn't budge it with a puller.

Thank you for the replies on this. I figured I was in for a big challenge on getting this done. Now that I know there's only one snap ring I just gotta get it to budge. Dumb question: Is the threaded hole in the middle of the pivot pin there for pulling the pin out then (by using a puller)?

the threaded hole you see is for a slide hammer if I remember right. Still can come out hard. Last time I pulled one was 20 plus years ago.

Thank you Lonn for explaining the threaded hole. Shameless, the "Axle main member" has a piece welded onto it that the pin slides through. There's also a bushing in there. The pin has to come out so the main axle member can be removed (it's all one piece). I'll try to post pictures of my progress.

I used a bolt and welded a flange on it so I could grab it with a slide hammer. There is probably a lot of wear on the pin and perhaps a groove that's catching on the way out. I've did 3 or 4 of them and eventually got them all to come out.
Second thought--- since you're replacing the main axle member anyway, cut it out of the way with a torch. Then you can get into the pivot sleeve and pin and cut it out also. (As long as you don't mind buying a new pin)

I got the front axle off. Thank you to all who posted replies and suggestions on this. The front pivot pin was grooved/worn so that did make it tough to pull out but I eventually got it out. I did find a good "used" pivot pin at a local salvage yard to put back in. My next question: I ordered a "front pivot pin bushing" from the local AGCO dealer (which I now got). The "exploded" view of the front axle shows to only have "1" bushing. However, the bushing is only 1/2 the length of the main axle slot that it goes into. Shouldn't the bushing be the same length as the slot it goes into? Do I need to buy another bushing? The bushing in the old axle that I took off is longer. There is a grease zerk for greasing the pivot pin. I'm thinking I may need to buy another bushing. I'll take a picture of what I'm talking about when I get home and post it on here later. The bushing part number I got from AGCO is 70242962. According AGCO this is the correct part.

Right or wrong I put 2 bushings in mine

Here's a picture of what I'm trying to describe. To me it makes sense to put 2 bushings in, otherwise it'd wear out faster I'd think. There has to be a way for the grease to get to the pin when greasing...so 2 bushings would allow for the grease to get to the pin between them right?

Not fiamilal with your tractor but have worked with pins.Suggeston lub good and put pipe wrench on and turn and pull. Bore a hole in bushing for greese.
