I recently purchased this 1948 G and I have no experience with Gs. What is the canister-like device on the front?

Never seen that before.  Could be a farmer add on that is related to the non-factory hydraulic system you have on your tractor.

Looks like a track roller someone used for weight.

Nice looking G.  Unusual since it has the two way hydraulic system.
The roller on the front is probably a weight that the owner put on.  Well mounted and does not look bad.
Looks like a good unit.
What was it used for?  That may answer your questions.
Good Luck!
