I've purchased an Allis Chalmers D12 Serial Number 3249, which makes it a 1961 year model.
I'm trying to determine the engine serial number. On the engine block (on the left side) next to the tractor serial number it is stamped with 12-1817R. On the engine block (on the right side) it has raised casting numbers AM 4902-1. From information I've gathered neither of these numbers matches the possible engine serial numbers. Does anyone know whether either number would be the engine serial number or am I looking in the wrong location for the engine serial number? Thanks

The number on the left side next to the tractor serial number on the torque tube is the engine serial. 12 designates the engine displacement 12= 149 cu.in. 10= 138 cu.in. 14 = 160 cu.in. Lots of guys thought they had a D-12 engine in a later D-10. The rest of the number would be the serial number of the engine. If someone has more info please correct me.

The 12-1817 R would be the Engine Serial, located at that location.

My Ser.III Ser. D-12 9423 has engine Ser. 12-5622 R

Tractor and Engine Serials are not numerically close because the 149 started use in 1957 in D-14's.

Starting with series II tractors, 10's and 12's had 149 ci engines. D-14's had 149 ci engines, all throughout. D-15's had the 149, in the earlier version, and higher compression, and speed. Series II d-15's had 160 ci engine. All of this comes from norm's book...
